Now that the second Book of Dust is out - would you read that last after you had read the first book and the trilogy, or could you read it as a stand-alone?

Definitely after the trilogy and Book of Dust one - you won't get nearly so much out of it otherwise.

Also the His Dark Materials trilogy is absolutely fantastic and much better than the first Book of Dust (not yet finished this one) so it's better to start on a high!

Really222 · 07/10/2019 18:19

Oh so do you read the trilogy before the book of dust one?

you need to have read the first book and the HDM trilogy really.

I think you need to read the trilogy first yes.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/10/2019 18:23

You can read trilogy then book of dust 1. It’s the way everyone else read them so will make sense that way. Don’t think it would make much difference if you read Book of Dust 1 then HDM trilogy though.

UrsulaPandress · 07/10/2019 18:24

You haven’t read them?

Jealous.

Jinglejanglefish · 07/10/2019 18:24

Yes you need to read the trilogy first, absolutely. Then book of dust one.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/10/2019 18:27

If you haven’t read Northern Lights yet, worth doing that before the BBC series starts at the beginning of next month.

Really222 · 07/10/2019 18:57

Thanks a lot!

I have read Northern Lights, but a really long time ago. I never read the other two though. Not properly. Some of the second one, and none of the third.

Ok, will start with the trilogy 😊.

(I have also seen The Golden Compass, but am looking forward to the series).

Love His Dark Materials. Was bitterly disappointed in The Book of Dust though so havent bothered with the second one.

Really222 · 07/10/2019 19:10

Oh no that’s two people who think the book of dust is not great. What’s wrong with it?

OP posts:
yellowsun · 07/10/2019 19:17

I enjoyed it! Have just started the second one and enjoying it so far.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 07/10/2019 19:48

The second half of Belle Sauvage isn’t great although the first half is good.

Really enjoying the new one so far.

Picklypickles · 07/10/2019 19:51

I first read HDM years ago now, re-read them again this year after La Belle Sauvage which I absolutely loved. I've got about 50 pages left of The Secret Commonwealth, I haven't been able to put it down. It's going to be agonising waiting for the 3rd one.

Nearlyadoctor · 07/10/2019 20:10

Another here who loved The Book of Dust.
For anyone who hasn’t read HDM it wouldn’t matter if you read TBD before or after.
