Anyone know a non fruit eater?

My 18 year old last ate fruit when he was 2 years old. He has always eaten practically everything else- the only things I can think of that he doesn’t like are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and fresh mackerel. I find this practically incomprehensible. He just says -and always has- “I don’t like it” He drinks orange and apple juice- and fruit juice based cocktails (!). Is there anyone on here that’s the same and can explain him to me? The rest of the family eat loads. I don’t think anything happened when he was two that would have put him off.

I can’t remember the last time I ate any fruit. Maybe two years ago. It just doesn’t do much for me, I eat lots of vegetables though.

DramaAlpaca · 06/10/2019 19:46

I'm not that keen on fruit, apart from berries occasionally. I eat masses of vegetables though. I much prefer veg, it's not as sweet.

dun1urkin · 06/10/2019 19:46

I’d never eat fruit if it wasn’t, on occasion, put in front of me, eg a couple of raspberries on a piece of cake.
Oddly, my favourite vegetables are technically fruit Smile

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 06/10/2019 19:47

My DS.

He actively avoids fruit. Idiot.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 06/10/2019 19:47

DS (almost 12) doesn't eat any fruit at all. Like your DS he likes some fruit juice but never eats the fruit. Says he doesn't like it. I don't mind, he's healthy & strong, never ill.

Bloodybridget · 06/10/2019 19:47

Yes DGS aged 14. He is quite fussy about food generally though. I think he still drinks orange juice - he used to, anyway. When he was a toddler he enjoyed blueberries . .

AlohaMolly · 06/10/2019 19:48

I’m not a massive fan of fruit, it hurts my teeth. Ill have berries on occasion and bananas every now and then, perhaps the occasional clementine, but Apart from that I’m not fussed!

Mrsfrumble · 06/10/2019 19:49

I only eat apples. I like the taste, but hate the texture of most other fruit. I eat loads of veggies though.

LoseLooseLucy · 06/10/2019 19:49

I don't eat fruit five times a month, let alone a day. As pp, I prefer vegetables.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/10/2019 19:49

We really don't eat a lot of fruit, and I've stopped buying it because no one was eating it, so it's become a bit of a vicious circle. DH buys bags of apples that he takes to work and I have frozen berries in porridge maybe once a week, DS doesn't eat any fruit. The 'leave it out and they'll eat it' approach doesn't work and I hate food waste...

PivotPivotPivottt · 06/10/2019 19:50

Me. I have oral allergy symptom which started about 11 and got worse the older I got so I haven't ate fruit since then.

leghairdontcare · 06/10/2019 19:50

DH doesn't eat fruit or vegetables. It's so annoying. MIL says it's because she was having a difficult time when he should have been weaning. I think he's had ample opportunity to try and introduce fruit and veg into his in the 33 years that have passed since, but there we are. Looking forward to being a widow when he dies of scurvy.

Nix32 · 06/10/2019 19:50

For me it's the textures - bleurgh. And when they're bruised or squashed or going brown, ugh. No problems with veg, although I don't eat salad stuff - cucumbers, beetroot etc - either.

swampytiggaa · 06/10/2019 19:50

Me. The only time I eat fruit is if it’s on top of a cake and even then I’d rather not.

I eat loads of veg and salad which I prefer.

romany4 · 06/10/2019 19:51

I eat bananas sporadically. That's it.

I have IBS. All other fruit either gives me reflux or stomach cramps

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2019 19:51

I don’t mind- well he’s too old for me to mind now anyway!. It’s just his complete non fussiness about all other food that baffles me.

I remember his big sister used to get really upset because she wanted to share something delicious like strawberries with him and felt he was missing out on a treat.

I don’t eat fruit. Veg yes but fruit no.

HoneyandSpice · 06/10/2019 19:52

I'm probably going to get flamed for this, but the only non fruit eater I know is severely autistic and has ADHD. He lives on a diet of chips. Obviously there is a scale, but to not eat any fruit whatsoever is a little bit concerning diet wise.

Paddingtonthebear · 06/10/2019 19:53

It’s too sweet for me. Doesn’t fill you up either. And is bad for teeth. I might eat the odd piece of mango or strawberry but never actively choose to eat it or ever crave it. Oh well. I think vegetables are more important! My DD eats both.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 06/10/2019 19:53

I don’t ever remember eating fruit. (All my family are great eaters- fruit, veg, healthy dinners etc) I was what used to be called an extremely fussy child. nowadays I would probably have a sensory aversion/ diagnosis. I ate very little at all. My diet has improved vastly since I was a teenager but fruit just hasn’t made the cut- yet. I expect i’ll Get there eventually.

fatulousatforty · 06/10/2019 19:54

Unless it's in a cocktail. I'm out

LoseLooseLucy · 06/10/2019 19:54

Why would you be flamed for that comment HoneyandSpice? My 4 old is severely autistic and eats more fruit in a single day than I do over a month. It isn't indicative of anything.

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2019 19:54

As far as I know he is entirely NT and has a very varied diet. I know non - NT people who have very restricted diets. He’s not like that at all.

I know a couple of non fruit eaters. They don’t have any other ‘issues’, they just don’t like fruit.
I love all fruit except bananas!

Deadringer · 06/10/2019 19:54

I don't like fruit, especially berries, I hate the squishiness of it. Funny enough I don't like tomatoes, sweet potato or mackerel either. If I am honest I don't really like vegetables either, although I do eat them, and I eat pretty much everything else.
