Anyone know a non fruit eater?

My 18 year old last ate fruit when he was 2 years old. He has always eaten practically everything else- the only things I can think of that he doesn’t like are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and fresh mackerel. I find this practically incomprehensible. He just says -and always has- “I don’t like it” He drinks orange and apple juice- and fruit juice based cocktails (!). Is there anyone on here that’s the same and can explain him to me? The rest of the family eat loads. I don’t think anything happened when he was two that would have put him off.

I don't eat much fruit but can eat vegetables until they come out of my ears.

I buy frozen berries and pop a few in my porridge now and again - but I find fruit too sweet and they are higher in calories and sugars than green veggies.

Avocados and tomatoes are fruits I guess- and I eat those as they fit into my eating plan.

Bananas make me gag.

Dangerfloof · 06/10/2019 21:43

Not a great fan of fruit, if its placed in front of me already peeled, pitted, stoned whatever then probably I will eat it. That rarely happens though.
Yeah I miss out on micronutrients but I survived this far.
It's a mixture of reasons
Apple skin gets stuck inbetween my teeth, pineapple and others make my mouth sore after eating, biting into a stone accidentally really irks me.
Any veg though am happy to eat and am fine with preparing.

Glad to see that not liking fruit is not that unusual, as sometimes feel a bit weird for being a fruit-hater! I love veg (unless it is too sweet tasting) but also don't like sweet foods in general, never eat puddings or chocolate. Love savoury food.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 21:47

I don't eat squash either. I hate sweet vegetables.

MiniTheMinx · 06/10/2019 21:49

I'm allergic to almost all fruits. I can eat bananas but I don't. So, I don't eat fruit.

Doilooklikeatourist · 06/10/2019 21:56

I can’t be arsed to peel things , so I eat grapes and tinned peaches 😀
Bananas make me heave , even the smell of the peel 🤢
Give me a carrot and some broccoli any day
I’m nearly 60 , I’ve managed to survive

Skinnychip · 06/10/2019 21:56

My 13 year old DD barely eats any fruit....or veg! (Not through lack of trying) we've been through "get your kids involved in cooking/preparing" shes always been happy to help prep..but not eat. Vegetables are offered at every meal, she doesnt eat them. If i make a lasagne/shepherds pie etc she picks out the veg, if i make a "hidden veg" pasta sauce she only eats the pasta! She eats fruit maybe once a week...if that. No sensory or other issues just annoyingly unbelievably fussy!!

DAFR123 · 06/10/2019 21:58

I'm 42 never eaten a piece of fruit!

Longdistance · 06/10/2019 21:59

I probably only have an apple and a banana once a week. I do however eat loads of veg.

PanamaPattie · 06/10/2019 22:00

I'm not keen on fruit or veg as it upsets my stomach. I'll eat them if I know I not leaving the house for a couple of days.

BoswellsBollocks · 06/10/2019 22:07

I don’t really eat fruit except the odd apple and a couple of bowls of strawberries during summer. I do love veg and salad though.

Linnet · 06/10/2019 22:09

My cousin doesn’t eat any fruit or veg, she’s in her 60’s.

LemonPrism · 06/10/2019 22:18

Fruit goes mouldy and gross really fast too which is minging

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 23:22

Veg=great.

Fruit=rubbish.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 23:25

And I'm a woman who had a masive orchard.

You can do lovely things with figs. Savoury things.

And plums, apples and greengages.

Such savory things.

GuiltyPleasure · 06/10/2019 23:32

The only fruit I've ever eaten is an apple & that's a Granny Smith, which is fairly sour. I just don't like the taste of fruit. I don't like anything sweet, either in its original format or as part of a dish. I do however love orange juice & eat lots of veg.

DartmoorChef · 06/10/2019 23:34

I rarely eat fruit and never did as a child either. None of the family were big fruit eaters. I remember we had tangerines at Xmas and that was it.

I eat loads of veg. Will happily eat a tomato (OK that's technically a fruit I suppose) as if its an apple, and snack on celery sticks.

I occasionally drink fruit juice but prefer tomato or grapefruit as its less sweet.

We didn't have a fruitbowl at home when I grew up and it never occurs to me to buy any when I go shopping.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 06/10/2019 23:41

I am a bit take it or leave it about fruit as I am prone to reflux. I love veg and the only vegetable I don’t like is fennel. If I go to the fridge and there is a choice between fruit or leftover cooked broccoli - I would snack on the broccoli.

DH on the other hand is a fruit fiend and could eat 5 -10 portions a day.

midlifecrash · 06/10/2019 23:49

I wonder if it's because a lot of the fruit we can buy here isn't really ripe and can be a bit woolly and tasteless. Apples can be good but things like apricots always need cooking to bring out any flavour. And grapes are always the varieties that taste of nothing but sugar. DH will eat masses of apricots, figs, etc if we go on holiday in Italy or Spain where the fruit is sun ripened. He rarely eats fruit here.

nutellalove · 06/10/2019 23:52

I mostly avoid too.

Isthatrightaye · 06/10/2019 23:55

I’m not a big fruit fan. It’s very difficult to ensure it’s ‘just right’ and not either unripe or overripe. The texture doesn’t sit well with me and it’s often sour or spunks juice all over your face.

Plus it’s just a hassle to prepare.

BrightSpells · 07/10/2019 00:01

Love fruit
Love veg
Love salad

Hate fruit juice and smoothies

PickAChew · 07/10/2019 00:09

I'm not keen on fruit. I do have a daily banana on my breakfast and the odd apple in season. Some cooked apple, plum or berries but probably wouldn't bother if I wasn't cooking it for the boys. Only the odd squeeze of citrus tgT I generally regret.

YesQueen · 07/10/2019 00:10

Yeah a friend doesn't eat any fruit or veg. I mean none whatsoever

PickAChew · 07/10/2019 00:12

Also mildly allergic to grapes and less molsdly allergic to kiwi fruit.
