Anyone know a non fruit eater?

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2019 19:43

My 18 year old last ate fruit when he was 2 years old. He has always eaten practically everything else- the only things I can think of that he doesn’t like are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and fresh mackerel. I find this practically incomprehensible. He just says -and always has- “I don’t like it” He drinks orange and apple juice- and fruit juice based cocktails (!). Is there anyone on here that’s the same and can explain him to me? The rest of the family eat loads. I don’t think anything happened when he was two that would have put him off.

I will very happily sit and eat a big bowl of peas in their pods over a piece of fruit any day

I decant frozen peas into a bowl and graze for a snack Blush.

Agree about pears, never right. Granini Pear Juice is delicious though.

@ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave love frozen peas as a snack!

Ginkypig · 08/10/2019 01:37

But how are there more carbs in a some peas than there are in the equivalent amount of fruit?

nakedavengeragain · 08/10/2019 04:07

@Ginkypig not quite.
100g of peas is 14g of carbs
100g of blueberries is 14g of carbs

So almost exactly the same BUT the net carbs are very different. That is the carbs less those carbs that are fibre. The carb in the peas is mainly fibre and not much sugar. The carb in the blueberries is all sugar and not much fibre.

Of course that's blueberries but 1 banana has more carbs in it (22g) than I eat in a day (less than 20g)

Peas are off my veggies list anyway as they are just too carby! I can have two plates of broccoli for a handful of peas!

cricketmum84 · 08/10/2019 08:50

Just to wade into the pea argument.... peas are also really high in protein! Green peas contain 5g protein per 100g.

notso · 08/10/2019 10:06

@BikeRunSki how did you make yourself like bananas? I've tried one a year for 20 years so maybe there's no hope for me!

BikeRunSki · 08/10/2019 12:04

@notso. I was at a conference CS on a really hot day and I didn’t fancy any of the fancy puddings. The apples and oranges looked a bit manky, so I thoughtful try a banana. I really wanted to like bananas, as I am quite sporty. This one was slightly green still. It was OK!! I realised that it wasn’t bananas that I disliked, but soft, brown, stinky bananas, that my mother loves. She always used to let them get to this state before offering them up, so that it how I always thought they should be eaten.

OliveOwl · 08/10/2019 12:15

Fruit sugars might not agree with him. Sweet potatoes are high in polyols, tomatoes high in fructans (especially reduced sauces and cherry Tomatoes). Fruit is usually fairly high in fructose.

I was a bit like that as a kid, for a few years after having bad food poisoning. Would not eat most dairy, tomatoes and most fruit. If I had to eat them, got heat spots or an upset tummy.

There’s lots of info on this around the Low Fodmap diet.

OliveOwl · 08/10/2019 12:17

@BikeRunSki green bananas are low in Fodmaps, whilst ripe and over-ripe ones are high in them (specifically Fructans)

8stoneloser · 08/10/2019 12:20

I'm keto carnivore - haven't eaten fruit or vegetables for that matter for more than 3 years. No scurvy and no ill health. I'm in the best health I've even been in.

You can get away with not eating fruit and vegetables if you're not eating mineral and nutrient leeching carbs like grains and cereals.

BertrandRussell · 08/10/2019 12:30

@8stoneloser so do you just eat meat? And fish? Nothing else at all?

OP posts:
8stoneloser · 08/10/2019 12:36

@BertrandRussell meat, bone marrow, fish, eggs, cheeses, fresh cream, butter, ghee, olives and olive oil, real nuts (no peanuts or cashews), salt, herbs and spices.

Occasionally, when they're in season, I'll have some berries but that's it.

user1471449295 · 08/10/2019 12:44

I’m a non fruit eater. No issues (touch wood).

Camomila · 08/10/2019 12:46

DS is a fan of a big bowl of buttery peas, I did think it was a bit boring but then I happily eat a big bowl of chickpeas in olive oil.

Its a shame I can't get DS and DH to like lentils though, or pasta e ceci...pulses are just so comfort foody.

BrightSpells · 08/10/2019 12:59

Nutrient leeching carbs.

Lol

ineedaholidaynow · 08/10/2019 13:03

8stoneloser that seriously can't be healthy

Dangerfloof · 08/10/2019 13:19

How can people not like cherries, or a lovely sweet apricot
Or a pear
So erm don't Google cherry fruit fly on YouTube. Apparently not dangerous to eat but they put me off cherries for life. I'm ok with dried apricots except they are a bit pricy for me, I would prefer to buy more veggies than dried apricots (plus they give me the runs) and normal apricots are often rock hard or soft and sappy and juicy, yuck.
Pears, well nearly always hard unless cooked. Cba.

Coldemort · 08/10/2019 13:27

I'm the opposite. Could quite happily live off fruit all day long but have to really force myself to eat veg. The only veggies I would eat for enjoyment are sweet corn and a bit of red onion. The rest is a battle.
Can I swap taste buds with some of you guys please?

ShippingNews · 08/10/2019 13:29

My son is 29 and to my knowledge he hasn't ever eaten fruit in his life. Just doesn't like it. He's in perfect health, never had any problems.

HoldMyLobster · 08/10/2019 13:51

This is a curiously interesting thread. I'm not a big fan of fruit and have always felt vaguely guilty about that. I know I ought to eat it but I don't want to.

I developed oral allergy syndrome in my 30s and now I don't eat much fruit at all, but I think for years before that I was having minor reactions, and I just hated the way fruit made me feel, but couldn't work out why.

Even now I don't eat much of the fruits that I'm not allergic to. They taste good but I hate the way they make my mouth feel.

Eating is about so much more than just flavor.

HoldMyLobster · 08/10/2019 14:00

Sorry, this made me smile. You listed probably my three worst foods for allergies. I haven't eaten a raw cherry or pear in about 15 years. The more ripe and organic the fruit, the more I react. They taste wonderful but the after-effects would probably land me in the ER.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 08/10/2019 14:15

Allergies are something different though. It’s not you don’t want to, you just can’t.

Sorry about that!

HoldMyLobster · 08/10/2019 14:17

Yes absolutely. I think I was actually allergic for a long time before I realised. I've been having allergy shots and I did eat an apple a while ago, and I only felt a tiny bit itchy. I'm building up to a nice ripe pear :-)

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 08/10/2019 14:22

Pears are bastards, hope you find one that’s worth it.
