Anyone know a non fruit eater?

My 18 year old last ate fruit when he was 2 years old. He has always eaten practically everything else- the only things I can think of that he doesn’t like are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and fresh mackerel. I find this practically incomprehensible. He just says -and always has- “I don’t like it” He drinks orange and apple juice- and fruit juice based cocktails (!). Is there anyone on here that’s the same and can explain him to me? The rest of the family eat loads. I don’t think anything happened when he was two that would have put him off.

I never eat fruit except maybe berries about once a year when they are in season. I just don’t really like it. The idea of eating an apple or a banana for pleasure would just never in a million years occur to me I’d have to force them down

Shessobrave · 07/10/2019 00:59

Hate fruit. All of it. Except perhaps watermelon.

I drink apple & orange juice which is good enough. Fruit does contain goodness however the sugar and acidity content wrecks teeth anyway so whilst it does need to be eaten ideally - never in large quantities

morrisseysquif · 07/10/2019 01:04

Fruit is too variable - I hate a sour mouthful.

I can eat a non too ripe banana or a clementine and that is it.

I prefer veg.

My kids are the same.,

Shessobrave · 07/10/2019 01:04

Actually I do eat plum tomatoes in sauces and cherry tomatoes. After all, tomatoes are a fruit! 🍅

Oh and Strawberries and red grapes (only on salads). Forgot about them!

user1573334 · 07/10/2019 01:15

If someone serves me fruit I will eat it, so I don't have any sensory issues or strong dislike, I just never ever desire it so I don't have it through choice. I'd much rather have a bowl of green vegetables or raw mushrooms. All my kids and DH seem to have an insatiable appetite for it, and get excited about fruit salads and smoothies, and I just can't understand why I don't enjoy it.

ineedaholidaynow · 07/10/2019 01:19

I’m not a great fruit lover. Like strawberries, melon, pineapple and satsumas. DH and DS think it’s funny that I only eat satsumas and can’t stand tangerines, clementines etc. I also like orange juice. When I was a child I would suck the juice from oranges but not actually eat the orange! I like banana flavoured things but can’t eat bananas. Love apple crumble, apple sauce but can’t eat apples. And summer pudding with red currants makes me heave.

Rickandportly · 07/10/2019 01:24

I never do.

It’s not that I don’t like it, I’m indifferent to it. Plus, I don’t snack, so that limits when I’d eat it.

I eat lots of veg though.

Also, put fruit anywhere near a pudding and I’ll cry.

My MIL. Until I met her I'd never known anyone who didn't eat at least one type of fruit. She dislikes it all in whatever form. DH didn't eat any either when we met but over time started liking bananas, strawberries, grapes and peaches. I love fruit and always have at least 3 different types in the house.

Frezia · 07/10/2019 01:32

Should've said DH didn't use to eat any fresh fruit but could have it in a cake or juice.

TheSandman · 07/10/2019 01:42

We eat shedloads of fruit. Got a whole patch of very productive blackcurrant bushes in the garden and the fruit gets jammed, frozen , or dried. We're picking/foraging blackberries at the moment - weather permitting. Made a lot of jam so far, next lot we pick are getting frozen.

I go OTT when I find reduced fruit cheap in the supermarket and buy it all. Our local supermarket had mangoes down to 10p each the other day. I've now got racks of the stuff drying in my (laundry) drying room.

DD 1 (17) is a fruit vacuum cleaner. The stuff just vanishes from a 2 meter radius. I have to hide grapes from her or no one else would get a look in.

Son (10) will eat Granny Smith apples and dried fruit all day if he could.

My 2nd daughter (13) is very fruit averse. I end up making her smoothies (which she then drinks with a straw) just to get some inside her. She can't bear to be in the same room as someone peeling an orange.

MotherofPearl · 07/10/2019 06:59

I force myself to eat a portion of fruit a day because I know I should, but it's a chore and I don't enjoy it. The only exception for me is fresh cherries in season. And like other pp I love all veg and salads.

Judging from many of the posts on here your son is not so unusual Bert. Smile

Yellredder · 07/10/2019 07:12

I rarely eat fruit. I like it though! It affects my IBS, so I cut down a lot many years ago. Then I cut most fruit out as it raises my blood sugars too much. I can manage a couple of strawberries or raspberries. So I have these now and again.

BikeRunSki · 07/10/2019 07:19

DS(11)!! Will maybe eat strawberries in an Eton Mess type pudding. He also doesn’t like sweet potatoes or tomatoes. Don’t know about smoked mackerel, he refuses to try it.And he’ll drink gallons of fruit juice and eat plenty enough veg. I find it odd, but he is healthy enough.

TheBatsHaveLeftTheBellTower · 07/10/2019 07:20

to not eat any fruit whatsoever is a little bit concerning diet wise.

It's actually not. The 5 a day message refers to vegetables really, rather than fruit, because of the high sugar content of fruit which causes sugar rushes, insulin spikes and crashes.

People feel very virtuous eating lots of fruit but it's not really much better for you than eating sweets and drinking coke.

The nutrients you get from them can be found in other food stuffs.

And smoothies are terrible.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/10/2019 07:21

My husband (late 60s) doesn't eat any fruit, though he does drink one glass of orange juice a day (UHT carton, with no bits, so the least like actual orange juice that can be found).

The only vegetables he eats are peas and carrots. He doesn't like them, but eats them because he thinks he should.

BarryTheKestrel · 07/10/2019 07:27

DH doesn't eat fruit. Even as a child he hated fruit according to MIL. It's just never been something he's enjoyed. He will eat some strawberries in the summer if they are covered in cream but nothing else.
He also only really eats root veg, peas and corn and salad veg. Greens are also pretty much off his radar.

PancakeAndKeith · 07/10/2019 07:32

I like fruit but I never really bother eating it. Too much admin.

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/10/2019 07:39

The thing about fruit for me is how much of a gamble it can be.
You can never tell by looking at it if it’s going to taste how it should.
It’s the texture of most fruits that get me.

A fluffy apple.
A baggy grape.
A hard satsuma.
Nectarines that are only perfectly ripe for 30 seconds.

Don’t get me started on bananas.

ThursdayLastWeek · 07/10/2019 07:40

Oh and apart from Eton Mess there should be no fruit allowed in puddings.

CampingItUp · 07/10/2019 07:42

My Ds has only recently started to eat fruit again after abandoning it at 2.

He eats loads of veg, including things that many refuse, but disliked the wetness and sweetness of fruit.

Veg is, on the whole, better for you than fruit and the majority of your 5 a day should be veg.

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2019 07:51

How can people not love raspberries??
I still think my ds is in a tiny group- most of you either have medical reasons why they don’t or will eat one or two types, or will eat it if ir’s prepared for them.....

A couple of people have said they know someone who eats no fruit or vegetables. What do they eat- just a piece of meat or fish on a plate on its own? How do they ever go to the loo?

Fruit just the same as Coke and sweets? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard on here.

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2019 07:54

I still remember the poster who said children shouldn’t have peas because they are “pure carbs”....

The person I know who doesn’t eat any fruit or veg wouldn’t eat fish either. He basically eats burger and chips, chicken nuggets and chips, jacket potatoes with cheese etc. All beige food. No idea about his toilet habits, I’d rather not know!

duckii · 07/10/2019 08:06

I'm the same.. i don't remember the last time I had any.. maybe as a child? i hate fruit, I won't go near it either. Love vegetables though. @ChristinaMarlowe I'm the same as the him! I'm glad I'm not alone Grin
