Anyone know a non fruit eater?

My 18 year old last ate fruit when he was 2 years old. He has always eaten practically everything else- the only things I can think of that he doesn’t like are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and fresh mackerel. I find this practically incomprehensible. He just says -and always has- “I don’t like it” He drinks orange and apple juice- and fruit juice based cocktails (!). Is there anyone on here that’s the same and can explain him to me? The rest of the family eat loads. I don’t think anything happened when he was two that would have put him off.

My fiancé very rarely actively decides to eat fruit but doesn't dislike it as such and will happily eat it the few times a week I put it in front of him!!

PurpleDaisies · 07/10/2019 08:11

I’m not a fruit fan at all. I will eat it out of politeness but I wouldn’t ever choose it.

TheBatsHaveLeftTheBellTower · 07/10/2019 08:12

Fruit just the same as Coke and sweets? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard on here.

I didnt say just the same I said not much better.

Learn to read 🙄

And then maybe use that skill to find out more about it.

The 5 a day refers to veg rather than fruit ideally because of the sugar - they are not equal nutritionally. The negative impact of sugar on your body is the same whether it comes from fruit or sweets/coke. The only difference is that fruit has micronutrients that aren't found in sweets/coke but can be found in other foodstuffs without the sugar.

This thread made me so hungry! Breakfasted on strawberries, blueberries and grapes. Eyeing up some watermelon now.

Camomila · 07/10/2019 08:24

Did he have reflux as a baby? Maybe he associated it with indigestion/pain.
Or allergies - DS got hives with lots of fruit as a baby but grew out of it (you'd remember allergies though)
DM has reflux and when its bad she can't eat any fruit (apart from banana) or any raw veg.
I've got similar atm, I've got hyperemisis and any fruit even cooked makes me so ill, I can only eat cooked veg atm and weirdly only green ones and carrots - a pepper or sweetcorn will make me ill.

I love fruit, miss it lots! Sad

frugalkitty · 07/10/2019 08:28

My DD is 14 and hasn't eaten fruit since she was weaned. She eats veg though so I don't worry too much. I eat very little fruit, I don't like the texture or the seeds/pips.

Whoops75 · 07/10/2019 08:36

dh doesn’t ever pick up a piece of fruit and eat it.
He eats apple tart or Eaton mess but never just fruit.

I don’t think it’s odd, lots of people don’t like things.

lifeforus · 07/10/2019 08:38

My DH hardly ever eats fruit. He would eat a few grapes if they were on a cheeseboard, or apples in a pie, but that's about it. It's not that he hates fruit, he just wouldn't think to eat it as a snack.
My brother eats no fruit or veg ever, and hasn't since he was a baby, how he hasn't got scurvy I don't know.

Bluntness100 · 07/10/2019 08:45

I'm not a massive fan of fruit, and it's full of sugar anyway. Many people aren't, it is completely normal.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 07/10/2019 08:53

I don't really eat fruit. I bought some oranges last week which I'm squeezing one at a time for a bit of juice as I feel I need a vit C boost. I bought bananas too, which have now gone over ripe Blush

I like and will eat apples, bananas and maybe satsumas, just not very often at all.

I eat all veg though.

Bluntness100 · 07/10/2019 08:55

Honestly op the weirder thing is not your son doesn't like fruit, it's that you think everyone should have the same food tastes as you.

JaneJeffer · 07/10/2019 09:11

I rarely eat fruit.

notso · 07/10/2019 09:27

I wish I liked bananas. I try them every year to see if I still hate them!
They seem like a good food, they're just so slimy and disgusting though and taste of green a bit like tomatoes. Plus they smell really bad.

My children love them when they were small I told them the bruises they in bananas are how brown sugar is made so they would eat the whole thing and I wouldn't have to handle them.

BikeRunSki · 07/10/2019 09:32

I didn’t like bananas until I was about 35. I know average about 1 a day, but they cNnkt be at all brown.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/10/2019 09:55

I think PP is right about freshness of fruit too. We grow raspberries and I happily eat them. We forage blackberries too and I made fab raspberry and blackberry sorbets and jam. We also grow figs as DH is North African and they remind him of home. A fig fresh from the tree is very different to shop bought.

Heartburned · 07/10/2019 09:59

This thread will descend into people claiming that fruit is essentially sugar and water, and in fact the properly health-conscious wouldn't dream of sullying their digestive systems with a kiwi.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 07/10/2019 10:01

I'm convinced bananas taste different now then what they used to.

They were tastier and more like bananas then.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 07/10/2019 10:01

Fruit isn’t a problem but fruit juice can be

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2019 10:04

@Heartburned - probably. As least isn’t descending -much - into what an intolerant, controlling bigot I am for thinking it’s at all unusual to not like any fruit at all! Grin

Lots of people say they don’t like any vegetables, so I’m not sure why not liking fruit is any different.

VeganVeganVegan · 07/10/2019 10:14

Me, I hate fruit because I was made to eat at least 10 pieces a day as a child. I love vegetables and eat more than enough.

nakedavengeragain · 07/10/2019 10:20

I don't eat fruit as I'm a long term low carber. Much prefer a plate of sprouts to a plate of fruit.
Having said that I'm allergic to bananas (vomiting and stomach aches) strawberries and black currants (hives), grapes (immediate poop) and cherries (eyeball blisters... i shit you not!)
Fruit tastes RIDICULOUSLY sweet to me now anyway.

ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave · 07/10/2019 10:25

Another non-fruit eater here.

Several reasons. I think the fruit we get here is pretty horrible, it is either hard, or tasteless or mouldy, often all three! I do eat fruit in Italy however, peaches, melon and watermelon, but there the fruit is fresh off the tree, sunned and warm. Yum.

I do eat apples. Bananas make me retch, texture bleuch. I used to drink orange juice but don't now as it gives me acid indigestion. Pomegranate juice or pear juice is an occasional treat.

Smoothies are disgusting, like drinking bogies. Again a texture thing, and really, really sweet, gagging.

I do however love salads, and veggies. Funnily enough I have to be careful with fresh tomatoes are they also give me acid, and make my tongue sore.

Interesting how so many of pp's and myself are similar.

RancidOldMeatbag · 07/10/2019 10:29

I have IBS, most fruit makes me ill, I can only eat bananas and strawberries which I eat rarely. Same with most veg too, in fact I am ill now as I had half a slice each of tomato and cucumber last night!

BertrandRussell · 07/10/2019 10:55

I didn’t realise you can’t eat fruit if you’re low carving.....
