Anyone know a non fruit eater?

My 18 year old last ate fruit when he was 2 years old. He has always eaten practically everything else- the only things I can think of that he doesn’t like are sweet potatoes, tomatoes and fresh mackerel. I find this practically incomprehensible. He just says -and always has- “I don’t like it” He drinks orange and apple juice- and fruit juice based cocktails (!). Is there anyone on here that’s the same and can explain him to me? The rest of the family eat loads. I don’t think anything happened when he was two that would have put him off.

My husband eats no fruit not since childhood

Paddingtonthebear · 06/10/2019 19:55

LOL, no I’m not severely autistic nor do I live on a diet of one food. I just think fruit is a bit overrated and too sweet for my tastes. There are, in my opinion, much nicer things to eat. I would always choose vegetables and salad over fruit. I always choose a starter and not a dessert. I don’t have a sweet tooth really. I am quite healthy Wink

Paperyfish · 06/10/2019 19:56

Another non fruit eater. I like everything else though. I get 5 x veg a day easy. I like fruit juice....smoothies I can just about get down if I have to...i’m Ok with wine!

mrspotatohed · 06/10/2019 19:56

I like apples but not apple juice or apple flavoured things. I love bananas and banana flavoured things. I like orange and strawberry flavours but not the fruits. I LOVE pineapple juice but I dont eat pineapple. I think it's the texture of most fruit I dont like. And i hate fruit in anything, mixed up with porridge or chunks of strawberry in cake or yoghurt for example. Watermelon is the devil 🙂

Davros · 06/10/2019 20:12

I'm not a fan of fruit. I can't be doing with skin, pith, pips etc. I prefer vegetables and salad

icebearforpresident · 06/10/2019 20:14

I’ll eat a slice of tangerine once in a blue moon but apart from that I don’t eat fruit at all, never have. It’s the texture for me, it’s either too squishy or like chewing on a bit of tree, I’ll drink fruit juice and fruit flavoured things quite happily. My kids eat plenty but just the thought of eating a banana makes me want to throw up.

MikeUniformMike · 06/10/2019 20:15

I rarely eat fruit. I will eat fruits that are generally thought of as veg.
I eat lots of veg.

Heatherjayne1972 · 06/10/2019 20:16

My 10 year old only really likes apples
But he loves salad things and will eat veg so it’s really not a massive deal
Fruit has a lot of sugar and acids in anyway

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 20:16

I dont eat fruit ever. I like the thought of fruit but I hate the texture of most fruits.

I love avocados and tomatoes though, both of which are fruit.

And I eat loads of veg, I eat at least 10 portions a day.

I just don't really eat fruit.

EdWinchester · 06/10/2019 20:19

Me! Can't remember the last time I ate any fruit. Probably a satsuma last Christmas.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 20:19

I'm quite happy to drink fruit-juice or eat a fruit pudding on occasion. I'm not anti-fruit.

I'm just not madly keen. As I suspect you DS is.

Greyhound22 · 06/10/2019 20:20

There are a lot of people that can't eat fruit - I have to be very very careful due to gastro issues so I think a couple of the posts about it not being normal are a bit harsh.

I do like it but I'm a bit frightened to eat it so I probably haven't had any for a couple of months as I've been ill. I love veg though and eat plenty of that every day.

palahvah · 06/10/2019 20:20

If he eats veg and protein and starch in other forms I certainly wouldn't worry.
Some people find the acid in fruit to be irritating on the inside of the mouth. Could that be it?

Drum2018 · 06/10/2019 20:21

Ds8 doesn't eat any fruit or veg. I don't see that changing any time soon. I boil his pasta in a pan with veg in the hope that some nutrients might soak into the pasta Grin

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 20:22

I have no issues with any food, my diet is as varied as you'll get. I just don't chose or really enjoy fruit.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 06/10/2019 20:22

My bil, a man in his 50s, doesn't eat any fruit at all. He has an otherwise very healthy diet though and is in good physical shape.

Pinkkahori · 06/10/2019 20:24

I'm not a big fan of fruit. I occasionally eat berries or some grapes but i have no desire to eat apples or oranges. Bananas give me stomach ache. I can't remember the last time I drank fruit juice.
I really love vegetables and salads though and eat all kinds, even things like sprouts and cabbage that other people often dislike.
I think apeople lot get a bit obsessed with fruit and feel very virtuous eating it but it's possible to have a varied and healthy diet without it.

Sunshinegirl82 · 06/10/2019 20:24

I have never eaten fruit, just really dislike it! I'm also not a fan of salad (cucumber, raw tomatoes etc). I'll eat tomatoes cooked though.

For me it's the texture I think, I find the combination of juice with a crispy or soft texture really off putting. I like all fruit juice and fruit flavoured things.

I'm not fussy about any other foods and will eat pretty much anything and everything else including all veg.

I've made it to my mid thirties without it being a problem to be honest. I'm definitely not autistic nor do I suffer from ADHD. I'm very rarely ill. I know it's a bit odd but your DS is not alone!

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/10/2019 20:26

And I eat citrus is many recipes, and I love the acid of lemon or lime. I love the flavour of orange. I love dried fruits. I like ripe melon with salty ham. And greengages off the tree.

I don't ever eat 'fruit' though.

CakeNinja · 06/10/2019 20:27

I don’t often choose fruit but when I do, I enjoy it. I eat some form of fruit daily but all of my dc actively enjoy and reach for fruit out of choice. Eg after her lunch today dd1 cut up and ate a kiwi and an apple.
I do buy a lot of fruit and it does all get eaten but I’m lazy and a sausage roll is easier to get out of the fridge and creates less mess Grin

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2019 20:29
Grin I don’t feel at all virtuous eating fruit! I just really like it- and I suppose I find it difficult to understand how anyone could dislike all fruit because ir’s so varied. I could understand not liking citrus, or soft fruit or something but I can’t understand not liking any fruit at all.

A colleague hates all fruit and has a full on phobia of bananas! He teaches PE and preaches the importance of a healthy diet as standard, the kids would be beside themselves if they knew his secret 😂 He can't even touch a smoothie. Told me in great detail whilst driving the minibus on a trip that he couldn't even stand the noises when people ate fruit near him and how the smell made him queasy. Doesn't seem to have done him any harm to be fair, he's very fit obviously and never off sick. Certainly surprised me! That's the only person I've ever known to hate all fruit though.

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/10/2019 20:32

Ds doesn’t eat fruit. He can’t stand the stuff.

He doesn’t even drink fruit juice

Pinkkahori · 06/10/2019 20:32

The strange thing is I have a very sweet tooth so it's a bit odd that i prefer vegetables to fruit.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 06/10/2019 20:32

My DB has refused all fruit since a similar age to your son. He's now a 30 year old vegan who eats a bigger quantity and range of vegetables than anyone else I know and seems just fine. He does have absolutely no sweet tooth at all, though, which I have always assumed is the reason why he doesn't see the point/appeal of fruit - to him they're just sweet vegetables and he'd always prefer the savoury version of something.
