When did you childrens' hair darken?

Hello all

In a very dark haired and eyed family, we have a blonde, blue eyed DD. I gather the blue eyes are here to stay but I'm assuming her hair will darken. However, she's 4 after Christmas and no sign of darkening.

If you had children with fair hair which then darkened, at what age did it happen?

DS gradually darkened from age 3, he’s 4 now and it’s what I’d class as “dirty blonde” rather than his light blonde of his toddler years.
I think he’ll be dark like me & DH within the next few years.
DD is light blonde still but she’s only 2 so time will tell

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/10/2019 19:07

I’d say between 4-6.

Dd was blonde til she was 7 and at 12 is now very dark brown like me and dh

Her eyes were blue/brown and they are also now dark brown

I was a child of dark haired and blonde haired people, my hair was platinum blonde on birth but has become steadily darker as the years go on unfortunately.

Both my girls got significantly darker between 8-11 years old (and then 1 got lighter again around 16 which is odd)

YesItsMeIDontCare · 06/10/2019 19:09

Sounds like me! Mum was brunette, brown eyes and Dad's hair was almost black and he has blue eyes. My brother has my mum's colouring, I have my dad's eyes... and did have white blonde hair. It is still getting darker and I'm mid forties!!! Now a dark blonde.

Shakirasma · 06/10/2019 19:11

DD2 was light blonde until she hit puberty, now aged 16 she's mid brown but the top layer bleaches in the sun every summer giving her beautiful natural highlights.

VirtualHamster · 06/10/2019 19:15

My sister was blonde as a child and started going dark age 7 or 8. By the time she was a teenager it was the exact same mid-brown as mine. I was never blonde. Although we have exactly the same hair colour, our colouring is quite different otherwise - strange how genetics works.

My dd - looking back at photos - has got gradually a 'darker blonde', but there was no point at which I suddenly thought she'd lost her baby blonde / very fair hair. Even now (at 18) she seems to go in and out of the lighter and darker blondeness without any seeming pattern.

nancy75 · 06/10/2019 19:19

my Parents are very dark & i’m even darker than them (almost black hair.) my brother had white blonde hair until he was about 5 - we looked like we had kidnapped him as he was so different to all of us.
His hair started getting darker age 5/6 and by about 11/12 his hair was fairly dark brown

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 06/10/2019 19:25

My family are mostly blonde, some of them are in their 30 and 40s and are still blonde.

icecreamsundae32 · 06/10/2019 19:30

My son was light blonde until he was 6 and now at 8 it's almost brown but in summer it gets lighter again.

babasaclover · 06/10/2019 19:31

I have dark brown hair now. I was born with white blonde hair and it stayed that way until I was about five, then it went to a nice dark blonde. It started going darker when I was teenage. My three-year-old daughter has blond hair, but she was born with black hair which fell out immediately and came back blonde. They really are no rules to it 🤷‍♀️

Seaandsand83 · 06/10/2019 19:32

My daughter was white blonde til she was 7 and then it started to darken - she was not happy!

Rachelover60 · 06/10/2019 19:36

Between 4 and 5. Mine also darkened when I was maybe six.

SoyDora · 06/10/2019 19:39

Mine are 5 and 4 and still quite blonde, but 5 year old is starting to darken. I think my hair darkened around 5/6.

sue51 · 06/10/2019 19:40

Both of mine were white blonde then their hair got progressively darker st around 7.

PennyandtheJetz · 06/10/2019 19:41

I had blonde hair until about 8 then it went mousy brown. Two of my DC had blonde hair but theirs went brown at 8ish too.

Juanbablo · 06/10/2019 19:42

Ds's started darkening at around age 4 and he's now got light brown hair. DD's hair was silver and started going darker when she was about 5. Her hair is still very light blonde. Ds2 hasn't darkened yet and he's coming up for 6. Still white blonde.

DramaAlpaca · 06/10/2019 19:44

DS1 & DS3 were both blonde until they were around 13 & 11. You'd never guess to look at them now that they'd ever had fair hair. DS1's is mid-brown & DS3's is dark brown. DS2 was never blonde, he went from having ginger hair as a toddler to having dark brown hair as an adult.

WildRosie · 06/10/2019 20:02

I don't have children but my own experience is fairly light blond hair until I was about six. Then it fairly quickly turned darker, arriving at a mid-brown colour by the time I was about seven. Forty years later it's the same brown with increasing amounts of grey but I don't mind that all. I'm thankful to have a full head of hair.

Theworldisfullofgs · 06/10/2019 20:04

My dd's hair went dark almost overnight when she was about 11. She was v blond when she was small, got slightly darker and is now really quite a dark caramel ish colour - think chocolate caramel, now she is 17.

CookPassBabtridge · 06/10/2019 21:36

I was a golden colour upto age 3 and then it went nearly white until I was about 12 when puberty started, and it went a darker yellow.
