Has anyone successfully adopted a BT phone box?

Looking to adopt a phone box (via a local charity) and wondered whether anyone had any experience/tips.

Following, as ours is about to be removed - it's apparently had two calls made from it in the past two years.

There are several good ideas as to how it could be re-purposed but no firm ideas yet.

All our local ones are mini library's they're wonderful and everyone uses them with good manners and the spirit in which they're designed, its lovey!

There was talk of of putting a defibrillator in ours, but now it's been earmarked to go outside the village hall (further away from the majority of the dying)

It would be a shame to lose it Sad

Titsalina

Those brilliant phone box libraries are what I immediately thought of, too!

OP

Great idea to 'adopt'. Will follow this thread with interest.

Yes! One locally to me was adopted and now contains a defibrillator. Local businesses and families sponsored a pane of glass for X amount and their name was engraved on it and the proceeds helped pay for the machine I think.

I think there’s other bits and pieces in it but that’s the main thing, the defibrillator. Go for it!

No helpful advice but the one near us has a mannequin called Cecil residing in it who wears a variety of different fancy dress outfits. He has his own Facebook page and is well loved. Currently sporting a Borat mankini I think.

Our village one had the phone removed a few years ago, but could not be taken away as it's listed, has become a bookswap library. Just put some shelves on the side where the phone used to be -- it's well used and popular, and a good use of a prominent, if tiny, space near the village hall.

WispyTurnip · 04/10/2019 09:51

Or you could do a mannequin one, obviously, and Cecil could friend your mannequin on FB.

Stumbled upon one that seems to have been gorilla gardened

We've been running an "unofficial" book swap in ours for a couple of years, just using the shelves next to the phone, so are looking to make it a permanent library. The charity who may support our application just want to know what will happen to the box years down the line if the box outlives our group - i.e. how liable they would be in an ongoing sense. We're obviously asking BT, but they are a huge organisation and it's proving quite tricky to find the right person to ask, so we wondered whether anyone had any experience.

DieCryHate - I love that idea - definitely need to do this at various points in conjunction with the library!

StillRunningWithScissors - that's fab!
