Help...9 year old DS has just told me he feels suicidal

We were driving home from cubs and he suddenly said he has what sound like intrusive thoughts, that he feels like he shouldn't exist and that he feels suicidal. We've got home and he's laughing at YouTube videos. I don't know where to go with this. Should I get him to call Childline now, should I speak to my gp, the school?

I spoke to the school at the end of last term because he was a bit like this-he's been bullied-I thought we'd got over it during the holidays, now this?

I just feel so sad for him. I have dubious MH myself and know how it feels to be suicidal, I don't want him to feel like that.

could you get him to phone The Mix, which is a charity that provides support for young people about mental health issues (phone number is 0808 808 4994). They are open 4pm-11pm daily but they can offer support. you can also call the parent's helpline on 0808 802 5544 (open 9am to 4pm daily) if you have any questions about how best to support him. does he have a school Councillor? it might be worth seeing if you can get him an appointment with them too. all the best x

I think you need to see the GP about this, even if it is just to set your mind at rest that it’s just a phase.

I think all sensitive or emotionally intelligent people experience feeling like this. I certainly did as a child, but it was the 70 s and feelings were taboo, so it didn’t mention itWink
Could it have been a momentary feeling that he felt safe enough to express?
I’m not saying it won’t arise again, and I think that’s within the range of normal for a sensitive soul.

Sorry I’m not being very articulate, I’m rushing before my go and collect dd, but wanted to reply x
