I think one of mine is being in primary school and playing football and crying that it was my birthday because we were stopped from playing

I remember my fourth birthday, and the cake, and pass the parcel to the music tape (renaissance music and country dances, no pop music!) my parents had put together.

At junior school, there was the tradition of the birthday child bringing in sweets to hand round, which bemused parents and teachers alike.

A birthday treat for my brother's 2nd birthday (I was then 4) was being taken to see the planes at Gatwick. The light rail transit between the terminals wasn't in place then: that would probably have been far more exciting!

I remember my uncle's 21st. Mostly for thinking we were up really late (I was 3yo) and then when we woke in the morning running in to find him and his friends curled up in sleeping bags. They must have loved us. :D

I remember not really understanding the game of pin the tail on the donkey at someone else's birthday, I was four or five. I watched everyone else getting the tail in the wrong place, then it was my turn; and I was shocked when I found I couldn't see anything! I didn't realise that was the purpose of the scarf.

My third birthday. We spent the night before in the Anderson shelter in the garden, and I remember walking up to the house in my dressing gown and slippers feeling excited because it was my birthday.
