Help me find a Sussex town/village to move to?

If you know Sussex well can you help me.

We want to move from London to Sussex. DH needs to commute into Victoria 4x a week so we need to be near a mainline train station. We need a really good state primary and secondary but we are religious. We want a big enough village that the primary age kids don’t have to drive to school.

We adore Lewes but it’s just a bit too far to commute 4x a week so maybe somewhere with an hour or under train journey.

Brighton is too big. We want to feel we live in the countryside. We do love Brighton though.

Budget is up to £2 million for a 5 bed house.

TIA.

Sackville is a good school very much been on the up since the appointment of the current head teacher (affectionately referred to as King Julian by students) my oldest 2 attended with now leaving this year having gone through to year 14. Teachers are engaged and care greatly about their students. I would have liked more parent communications I the earlier years but that really was dealt with when new html came in. School has a lot opportunities and are great at supporting students with their needs. We were happy with the school.

Should mention that Imberhorne school is also well liked in the area. And I'd you like FR have a look at Harrfield too.

Enko · 27/09/2019 14:35

That was meant to say ht not html (I should not type on my phone)

With £2m you could buy Rutland, a whole school and a church.

VenusClapTrap · 27/09/2019 14:50

@BikeRunSki they are still lovely places. Come down and visit us sometime! Smile

Horsham's good. Not sure what type of house you're after?

Tower Hill, just outside Horsham

Wisborough Green is lovely, not far from Billingshurst station. Good primary in the village and the Weald in Billingshurst has a good rep, with school bus from WG.

@VenusClapTrap you must be very close to me- I have one child in Wivelsfield and one in Chailey. To the OP- Haywards Heath generally has pretty good schools. With your budget I would look at Lindfield or Cuckfield. Horsted Keynes and Ardingly are both lovely. The commute to Victoria is ok and around 45-50 mins.

bonjourbonjour · 27/09/2019 15:15

Have a look at Cuckfield and Pm me if you like it :) best of luck !

I grew up just outside Forest row, a couple of miles away on the Ashdown Forest. I went to school at Sackville- that was in the 80s though so can’t really comment as to what it’s like. It was just a large secondary school to me- pretty average I think.

Very nice area although traveling from FR and getting on the train at EG is probably a fair bit longer commute than say, living in Horsham near-ish the station there.

I wouldn’t live in EG tbh, not on your budget anyway! Doesn’t seem to be that great from what I hear.

Lonelycrab · 27/09/2019 15:34

Horsted Keynes and Ardingly are both lovely. The commute to Victoria is ok and around 45-50 mins

Hmmhow do you manage that then? Yes they are indeed lovely but not on the main rail network unless that’s changed...

Marringdean Road, Billingshurst

I really like Horsham and surrounding areas. Billingshurst has the Weald, an outstanding secondary school and some good primary schools.

Cloudhopping · 27/09/2019 15:49

Billingshurst station is also on the direct line to Victoria-takes about 1 hour 10.

DuchessMinnie · 27/09/2019 15:54

@Lonelycrab sorry, that was just the train journey as the OP said she wanted less than an hour's train journey. You would have the journey to Haywards Heath first so not under an hour door to door. Unfortunately I know that only too well.

Lonelycrab · 27/09/2019 15:58

Aah ok sorry wasn’t trying to be arsey or anything. I also wondered if the Bluebell line had been converted into part of the network. So lovely round there op, btw.

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2019 17:30

@VenusClapTrap, I’d love to, I do mean to someday, but I am rather tied up in working-family life in Yorkshire. My father’s and grandparents ashes are buried in Hurstpierpoint; other family in Hayward’s Heath.

VenusClapTrap · 27/09/2019 20:36

@BikeRunSki that’s funny I grew up in Yorkshire and ended up in Sussex, so we crossed paths. I’ll say a little hello to your lot next time I’m passing Hurst churchyard if you can say a little Hi to mine in Barwick in Elmet!

BikeRunSki · 27/09/2019 20:38

@VenusClapTrap. Even funnier... I cycled through Barwick in Elmet last week end!

VenusClapTrap · 27/09/2019 20:39

OMG!

lovelyjubilly · 27/09/2019 20:45

Definitely Hassocks or Hurstpierpoint!

Yellowshirt · 28/09/2019 01:54

Two million pounds for a house???? Wow. You could move to Shropshire and get s helicopter to work! You got any jobs going at the moment?

PichmondRark · 28/09/2019 08:35

Wow, so many posts and ideas since I last checked in. Thank you!

I hadn’t thought of Billingshurst but definitely adding that to the lost. And I love the house linked to in Balcombe so will try and find out more about school near there.

Off to see the Forest Row house today and we are going to spend the day exploring different villages and towns around the area.
