New employer didn’t deduct student loan

I started a new job this month and so yesterday was my first payday.

It was higher than I expected so today when I got my payslip I checked why. It would appear they haven’t deducted my student loan repayment.

Do I need to make someone aware of this or do I keep quiet for the month? Partly joking of course.

They won’t be able to take it out now anyway, did you give them a p45? If so there is a check box on there that says to continue deducting student loan?
They will have a warning from Hmrc that states they need to deduct student loan from you so it should start next month to automatically.

I didn’t get a p45. I might get one - my notice ended 31st August and started new job 1st September. Have been paid a full month even though payday is 23rd so that’s pretty cool. Have taken the loan amount out and put in another account for now just in case.

I’ll email HR or whatever we have at school.

No one gets P45s anymore. The transition to a new job is done online. You should inform payroll in your new job.

@gabsdot45 that’s not true, people do get p45’s?
It seems likely they wouldn’t have known you had a student loan and therefore it will start from next month, they will get an automatic notification online.

Fruityb · 24/09/2019 19:06

Will I owe anything? Would I get hit next month for both?

No they should only take one lot as the amount will be a set amount per month, I missed someone’s last month (I work in payroll) and when I have inputted the information into the payroll system this month only one amount came out.

Mooncupblues · 24/09/2019 19:10

It’s not a big deal. They just won’t have got the notification from HMRC yet.

gabsdot · 24/09/2019 19:11

Apologies. They stopped issuing them here in Ireland this year. I thought the UK we're the same

gingajewel · 24/09/2019 19:17

@gabsdot45, have they? That’s a great idea, they are such a nightmare and it would be so much easier to be able to transfer everything online instead of chasing people for p45s etc! It would make my life easier?

Oblomov19 · 24/09/2019 19:49

I issue p45's all the time.
No harm will come of this OP.
It will be sorted next month.

BadnessInTheFolds · 24/09/2019 20:03

SLC lost me for months once, I tried to call up and tell them but they said they needed to be officially informed by HMRC.

When they found me again they just took the usual monthly deductions, no penalty for missed payments (although I suppose I'll be charged slightly more interest for paying it back later!)

I wouldn't worry at all

RezCowgirl · 24/09/2019 20:04

You do still receive p45. I was sent mine 2 days ago.

Fruityb · 24/09/2019 20:18

Thanks 😊 I’ll keep it to one side for now just to be safe! Worst case it’s £150 so it’s not the end of the world but it’s a nice little added extra I suppose!

I had an error on a P45 which meant I didn’t pay it for a year but was being overtaxed on national insurance so didn’t notice as the amount looked right.
Called them and they just basically said not to worry and just start paying again normally from my next pay cheque Confused
