How has this insurance company got my new card details?

Today I received my car insurance renewal quote by email. I've been with them a couple of years. Quote all fine, it will renew automatically, but they said they will take the amount from a card number I didn't recognise. It turns out it's for my new debit card as the old one expires at the end of the month. I haven't even used it once yet! It was still in the envelope. I don't understand how they've got the number for it.

Visa and MasterCard run schemes which automatically update card details when a card expires.
Merchants have to meet stricter security requirements to use this, and the card can't be used until you activate it.

@MongerTruffle Thank you! That's put my mind at ease. I didn't realise they did this. It is a Visa debit card.

I wish my companies did this-I get sick of emails telling me there's a problem with my payment details.
