Can landlord increase rent with 2 weeks notice?

If I am paying rent weekly to rent a room in a houseshare (have been for a few years) and I am required to give 1 month notice to leave, can he only give 2 weeks notice for a rent increase as he hasn’t increased increased the rent for the last 2 years. He says in theory it’s only 1 week notice but he’s okay to give me 2 weeks.

Doesn’t say much in the contract about notice on rent changes. Only about notice to leave.

Is this legally right?

Do you have a contract?

CacenCrunch · 20/09/2019 18:25

Sorry just seen the part about your contract. Hopefully someone with better advice will be along soon

Legally he needs to give you a minimum of one months notice.

Whether or not he can increase it depends on the type of contract you have.

If it's a rolling contract (e.g., month to month) then he can increase it, with a minimum of one months notice, but no more than once per year and only in line with local rent price.

If it's a fixed term contract then he can only raise it at the end of the fixed term unless you agree otherwise, if you dont agree then he can't increase it except in relation to very specific rules.

Thanks a lot @Venger

Issue is even if this is pointed out to him, surely as they have more power, they'll be able to get "revenge" by upping the rent more next time, etc

Does he live on the premises? Are you a lodger or do you have an ast?
