Should I try and sell this or give it away?

Little bit of a dilemma so would like some opinions.

After much thought I'm getting a new sofa, with my old ones I'm not sure if they'll be worth trying to sell or if I should just put them up for free.

They're quite old, I got them given off mil who kept them very nice, I've had them for about 5 years, they have some scuffs on the seat cushions from being scrubbed over the years and the sofa has a hole in the bottom (underneath) from when ex went mad one time looking for his phone and tore it open.
Other than that its a pretty nice, sturdy set.
On one hand I feel like I should give them away, I was given them anyway so not really losing out and it could help someone else out whos in need.
But, I also wonder if they'd be worth selling, not for a lot, like £40? I could do with the extra money but don't want to be cheeky and not sure if someone would even want to buy them?
What do you all think?

Should I try and sell this or give it away?

Also worth mentioning I have asked ex and exmil if they want them back but they don't have room.
Ex is currently asking around his friends so this is more what will I do if he doesn't find anyone who wants them. (Which I think will be unlikely anyway)

Oh and excuse my grey walls Blush
I decided I'd experiment one time, regretfully..
They will be painted back to cream before the new sofas arrive Grin

Is there a fire retardant tag on them? If so I'd contact the Douglas MacMillan shop and get them to take it away and sell it to make money for the charity.

If you can afford it,give them away. Do they have the flame retardant labels on them ,as charity shops cannot take them without

Holymolly · 18/09/2019 10:41

That's a good idea hollow.
I was thinking similar. But no, no fire retardant tag, will that matter?

Besides the point, but I like the grey walls!

Holymolly · 18/09/2019 10:42

There’s a charity in Scotland that repurposes old furniture that is then given to homeless person going into first home, maybe look for something similar in your area.

Holymolly · 18/09/2019 10:43

Haha peach, it's the wrong shade of grey! Too dark, looks more like concret 🙄

New sofas are grey though.. 😏

I would normally say give them away but the timewasting that goes on in freecycle is a wonder to behold sometimes.
Maybe put them up for sale for a small amount in facebook marketplace or similar. Then when you have a buyer you can either take their money or let them have them for free if you wish.

onyourway · 18/09/2019 10:44

No one will take it without the tags, sorry and you are not allowed to sell them without the tags.

Soola · 18/09/2019 10:46

Give away. Someone will paint that with Frenchic and give it a new lease of life.

Holymolly · 18/09/2019 10:46

Ah so I can't sell them at all??
Ah well thats settled then.
I'm not too fussed, wasn't really looming to make money although would have been nice.
I can still give them away though, yeah?

I 'sold' my old one on Ebay for 99p. Gave them the matching chair too.

Skyejuly · 18/09/2019 10:53

Yiu could get 150 for that. Try gumtree

Dieu · 18/09/2019 10:55

They're quite dated looking, and it sounds like you didn't pay for them in the first place, so I'd give them away. I think it can only be charity donated if the fire reg labels are still attached. If not, it'll do someone a turn on Gumtree.

Ticklemeelmo · 18/09/2019 10:56

Sell them on Gumtree or Schpock. Someone will buy them

MyKingdomForBrie · 18/09/2019 10:56

I've bought and sold sofas without the tags. Charity can't take them without the tags is all. If you need money then sell them for sure, they're worth what someone will pay.

Holymolly · 18/09/2019 10:57

Yeah I'm thinking gumtree or similar to give away.
I've had good use out of them and no, I didn't pay for them.
Also will save me £15-£20 if someone took them as i wouldn't have to pay the council to take them away.

Thanks all. Smile
Just needed to talk it through as was undecided.

If they were given to you in the first place and you can afford to give them away, then I would do that. Someone just starting out on in a flat or house would probably be glad of them. It will make you feel really good knowing you have helped someone out. Stick them on Gumtree for free collection.
