How to un-wedge glasses which are wedged together?

This seems like a problem the MN hivemind can solve!
DP put one glass (crystal tumbler) inside another (tankard) for packing. The glasses have become totally wedged together and the tumbler has shattered. DP is gutted as they both have sentimental value.
The tankard is undamaged so far but we are stumped for a way to rescue it. There is no space at all between the two, I can't even start to get a fingernail in there so it's impossible to get any kind of grip on it, or get anything down the side at all.
Pic (hopefully!) attached. Help!

have you tried putting into hot water? also with liberal amounts of washing up liquid dripped down around edges?

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 17/09/2019 17:53

Hot water maybe. Or tap the outside glass gently at the bit where they’re stuck together.

TheQueef · 17/09/2019 17:53

Hot water, not boiling.

Also try lying your fingers flat inside the tumbler and trying to slide it out.

I'd try iced cold water in the inner glass and sit the outer glass in warm water.

Notlostjustexploring · 17/09/2019 17:57

Ice in the glass, and sit it all in warm water. The inner glass should contract and outer glass expand so you should be able to ease them apart.

Let us know how you get on!!

Letthemysterybe · 17/09/2019 17:57

I wouldn’t use ice and hot water as you then risk the tankard shattering too.

Xitt · 17/09/2019 18:02

Ice and warm water might shatter the tankard but it’s the only option unfortunately. It’s no use in its current state!

Roselilly36 · 17/09/2019 18:09

Slight tap, take care though, it usually unwedges glasses.

janj2301 · 17/09/2019 20:22

Warm/hot, makes the air expand and push the top glass out

I have exactly the same problem! My DH went to get a glass from the cupboard and two fell out, wedging themselves in each other (also shattering another glass. Quite a trick.) Have tried everything, so watching this with interest...

Sorry, it's rather an underwhelming update. I had another look/fiddle and realised that the inner glass could move a tiny bit from side to side. So, I wobbled it a bit and then managed to slide it out. No hot/cold water needed!
Yesterday DP tried to separate them using warm water and washing up liquid and I think that made it worse but it was fine once they'd dried out.
Also, the inner glass isn't as badly broken as we'd thought, just chipped round the rim so although it's not usable, it can be kept as a momento.
Thanks for the tips!
