Fiancé has forgotten the paint name. We have viewings today. Help

We have people coming to view our flat today. Fiancé decided to clean the walls in the hallway last night... all fine, except a big random patch on one side where the lilac-grey paint has gone green.

He wrote down the paint colour somewhere but we've been searching most of the night and can't find it. I've promised to look again today, so I can try and get some of the paint and touch it up before the viewings... but I'm getting over so kind of chest infection with aches and shivers and I don't want to turn the place upside down again.

He knows it's Dulux. Is there any way to find out what colour it is?

If you've got viewings today it's unlikely to be dry by then and will smell of paint - I'd be wondering what you were covering up tbh!

Just sick a picture over it/rice of furniture.

FlaviaAlbia · 16/09/2019 09:30

There's a Dulux app that you point at the item and it colour matches to one of their paints. Not sure how accurate it would be but it might jog a memory if the right one popped up.

Don't touch it up before they come! The smell of paint would be an instant no from me. I'd think you were covering up a mouldy wall

EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 16/09/2019 09:32

Was it off the shelf or mixed? Take some photos in good light and ask the staff at the store. If you have a local trade centre go there rather than a DIY store, although counters where they mix paint can be knowledgable too.

BringMoreCoffee · 16/09/2019 09:34

Have you tried downloading the dulux visualiser app, which lets you scan in colours, or holding up a Dulux colour chart (pick one up from B&Q) to the wall? I don't think there's any better way really. Use it to narrow down the options then trust your gut on what name rings a bell.

I think PPs are right though, it'll look suspicious to paint today.

popehilarious · 16/09/2019 09:42

Don't rely on photos, the colour won't be close enough. The only sure way, if none of the paint names ring a bell, is to get a bunch of the paper sample things and hold them to the wall then go back to the shop to buy the paint once you've identified it!

Frosted Steel is lilac grey. Could it be that?

I discovered through touching up a patch that I had to touch up more than the little bit I had planned on as the paint ages when on the wall. The new patch will stand out and you might have to paint everything else. I second either a picture or a bit of furniture cover up.

Was going to say the same. You can't just touch it up if it's been on the wall or any length of time.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/09/2019 10:13

Oh dammit. I hadn't thought of smells or that we'd need to do the whole thing!

Frosted Steel sounds like the type of colour he'd go for...

Thanks for all the advice, I'll hold off painting and just explain to the estate agent I guess! I've never wished he was less into housework before Grin

You get a professional painter to come out and match it, or you chip off some of it and take it to a professional paint store that has the tech to match it.... this is basic stuff.
