I shouted at the pharmacy staff today and I feel really shit about it

I went to boots to buy some lemsip and calpol for me D.C. and DH who are sick with cold.

The rule about not selling more than 2 paracetamol items applies. I've got 2 packs of lemsip, calpol and one pack of cold and flu tablets. Fine. In the past the staff just do 2 transactions.

I get to the till which is long. They call another member of staff to help out. Lady on the beauty counter tells me to come to her for service. Scans the calpol and lemsip and says I can't buy anything else since I've exceeded my 2 paracetamol limit. I said just split the transaction in 2. She says no she can't do that. If I want more than 2, I need to go to the pharmacy. I said if I left the store or even left the queue and came back I'd be able to buy those items again. She's like, I don't make the rules.

Fuming, I walk to the pharmacy. Pharmacist isn't there. Waited for 7 minutes. Even more annoyed I go back to the original queue. New staff says can't buy more than 2. I politely asked her to do 2 transactions. Nope, can't do she says. Before I know it, I'm shouting at her about this ridiculous rule and how I've now been in 3 different queues / tills trying to buy some bloody lemsip.

Anyway, she refuses to serve me. Walks off😡

Now new staff at the till: I said I'll pay for these 2 lemsip and re queue. I paid and walked back to the pharmacy with my 2 other lemsips where the pharmacist or possibly manager is serving. She said she was really sorry the staff are allowed to split the transaction. She doesn't know why they didn't. At this point I started crying - I guess being ill and the stupid staff not using their brain plus finally being validated set me off.

Anyway, now I'm gone and I feel really shit for shouting at the staff. I remember being on the texting end of terrible customers and it's awful. I want to go back and apologise to the staff member but at the same time I'm pissed that 3 different people lacked the ability to use their brain over some bloody lemsip!

Of course they couldn’t split the transaction as there would be no point in having the restriction.

This

I can’t always put in to words what I mean. I know exactly what I want to say, but I often end up just waffling on and chatting shit.
Oh hey I’m even chatting shit about chatting shit, now Grin

namechanger0987 · 12/09/2019 19:55

I actually think it's shocking that the manager sold you them because the whole idea is so you can't take too many. They shouldn't let you requeue either if they recognise you.
Also, I hate it when managers undermine staff... especially when they are doing their job correctly. It makes the staff member look and feel rubbish

lboogy · 12/09/2019 19:55

They've split the transaction before and not only that, When I finally got to the pharmacist she let me by gasp 2 packs of lemsip and a pack of paracetamol.

She also told me the staff are allowed to split the transaction. She'd know what their policy is better than the staff surely ?

Pharmacists are under different rules to shop assistants.

NannyR · 12/09/2019 19:58

You are allowed to buy larger quantities/stronger doses when they are sold by a pharmacist.

LucieFurr · 12/09/2019 19:59

Your attitude is disgusting

Ginnymweasley · 12/09/2019 19:59

How would you feel if they bent the rules for you but their new manager was watching and they were given a warning? Retail sucks sometimes, and shouting customers when you are just doing your job dont make it any better.

ChicCroissant · 12/09/2019 19:59

Pharmacists can sell more paracetamol though, shops that are not pharmacies have a lower limit. You're not sorry at all though OP, gasp even though you were in the wrong!

KaleidoscopeEyes · 12/09/2019 20:00

The thing is though OP, you know you were out of order or you wouldn't have posted. So why are you quibbling about the rules still?

lboogy · 12/09/2019 20:00

Can't find the boots policy but Sainsbury's clearly says
'Our policy states that sales are restricted to a maximum of 2 packets of a combination of any paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen based products in a single transaction. Sales are also restricted to customers aged 16 and over.'

So the staff were in the wrong. 3 different people

OP posts:
Cookit · 12/09/2019 20:01

Surely the one who split the transaction was in the wrong?

tigertruly · 12/09/2019 20:02

YABU I don't know any shop that offers to split the transaction either?! Not the shop assistants fault or the pharmacist either they are just doing their job and could get fired if they are caught doing that

PurpleDaisies · 12/09/2019 20:02

You are coming across really badly here op. Just stop digging.

It’s pretty obvious to any reasonable person that “in a single transaction” doesn’t just mean if the same customer wants more you put it through the till on a separate receipt.

GummyGoddess · 12/09/2019 20:03

Go back and apologise. I was a bit rude to a pharmacist before and I felt so awful, I did actually go back and apologise, even in front of other people. She seemed a bit shocked.

PancakeAndKeith · 12/09/2019 20:03

You shouted at the woman and then got pissed off when she walked away!
So she should have to stand there and take that shit.

Also, lemsip is pointless rubbish.

Tltl · 12/09/2019 20:03

What would be the point in the rule op if you could just line up again.

If you were working in a shop would you risk getting a warning for the shouty unreasonable customer.
Your basically stamping your feet being like they're wrong, they're wrong.

Baboutheocelot · 12/09/2019 20:04

You know you were rude but you won’t apologise. They won’t expect it either, they will be used to it sadly.

Mum2jenny · 12/09/2019 20:04

I go to multiple stores/ pharmacies when I want or need to buy more than 2 products. In fact, in the local Morrison’s you buy 2 products through the main tills and then go to the separate pharmacy and get another 2 products.

escapade1234 · 12/09/2019 20:05

Isn’t splitting the transaction deliberately flouting the law via a loophole? Why should they do that for you? I think you behaved very badly. A large number of people waiting to pay in any chemist are probably feeling unwell, that’s why they’re there. Why do you take priority?

ChicCroissant · 12/09/2019 20:06

I'm guessing this thread isn't going the way the OP expected.

ChristmasBrisket · 12/09/2019 20:06

So the staff were in the wrong. 3 different people

They weren’t, but you don’t sound interested in listening so I’ll save myself the effort.

chinateapot · 12/09/2019 20:07

Sorry you’re feeling poorly
But you were in the wrong and should apologise
The change in the law to restrict the amount of paracetamol sold has probably reduced the number of deaths from overdose significantly (see article for those saying it’s rodiculous - it’s not, many overdoses are impulsive and limiting access saves lives - www.nhs.uk/news/medication/smaller-paracetamol-packs-may-have-reduced-deaths/)
Inconvenience getting OTC medication when you have a cold is minor compared to saving lives. I think the shop staff did the right thing.

GreatBigNoise · 12/09/2019 20:08

I would apologise if I had shouted at a member of staff even if they were in the wrong. I think it’s really nasty to shout at people. Maybe you were having a bad day but maybe they were too.

I don’t understand why some people are so quick to anger. I find it sad that they want to belittle strangers.

If I were you OP I would go back to the store and apologise.

lboogy · 12/09/2019 20:08

Tbh, I didn't go elsewhere because boots was the only pharmacy within a 15 minute walk.
I do feel bad for shouting at the staff otherwise I wouldn't have posted about it.

OP posts:
Celebelly · 12/09/2019 20:08

I've never heard of splitting the translations? Why the heck would they do that?! If their rule is two packs of paracetamol (and it's not 'law', but it's best practice that most shops follow) then why would they want to break their own rule? 🤔
