Dodgy emails ransom demand 😂

Opened an email in my junk folder which says they know all my passwords (and possibly did guess one of them). It didn't display a list just the one that I think they've guessed. Now I'm being held to ransom! If I dont give them $1000 ALL of my personal info will be displayed online, along with photos and messages.
Ok so I've checked my little book of important passwords and the one they mentioned is not in there. At first I was a a bit worried but you know what? I don't even have $100 in my account so I'm stuffed arent I?
I actually think it's quite funny tbh. Of all the people in the world they picked someone boring and skint ha.
I actually think though, that others could be quite worried about this or be duped. I wonder how common these types of email are? I've had the PayPal, tvlisence, bank account spam emails but never something like this Shock.

Oh Sparklingm how could you resist?

MY Mum, who is nearly 80, certainly has no internet, gets regular phone calls informing her it will be cut off. She gets called a liar loads!! I like to answer when I'm there and play with them a little, after all, it stops them getting to someone they can actually manage to con!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/09/2019 22:07

If anybody hasn't seen this before, it's very funny!

SaskiaRembrandt · 12/09/2019 22:17

HMRC have been after me for months. Any day now they're going to be breaking down the door and carting me off to jail.

Elieza · 12/09/2019 22:21

Op is the one password they have your myfitnesspal.com password? They were hacked last year and sold all out names and passwords on the dark web a year later, which brings us to this March. I got some of those emails last month. Cheeky buggers. Don’t reply. Ignore. Change any passwords for any sites that use that same password.
If it is that password they haven’t hacked you. All your other things are safe. I don’t think it will kill either of us if they publish how many scones we ate one day or somesuch!.....

TakeABreakAt12 · 12/09/2019 22:23

I've had similar Blush Except mine threatened to expose a video of me watching porn. They claimed to have put a camera on my phone so they could film me.

I was genuinely worried as I'd watched some porn that day, and probably make a funny face doing so...

Alas, they wanted £5000. I don't have it so I was screwed either way

ScrambledSmegs · 12/09/2019 22:37

BT Openreach have been trying to contact me apparently. 'We regret to disconnect your internet connection'. Even the automated calls are shoddy.

Anthilda · 12/09/2019 22:41

@Elieza it could well have been myfitness pal. It is not a regular password of mine though. I still think I might change a couple round just to be safe.
@TakeABreakAt12 😂 I actually never watch porn for the very reason that someone might find out!

Lellochip · 12/09/2019 23:03

I got one quitting the password I've used on probably every online account for about 10 years. (I work in IT too, do as I say etc! 🤦🏻‍♀️)

That was a long night of trying to reset every password I could think of... I've also been told that my hacked webcam footage was 'spectacular' - have to say I'm a little disappointed they've said this to others too!

SpringFan · 12/09/2019 23:05

programme. If you are worried about passwords, it mught be worth thinking about a Password manager programme. There are several around, LastPass and Daslane seem to come out well in reviews. I use the free version of on of them and its quite easy to use,
I di however, have my MasterPassword written down in a safe place, for when my fingerprint doesn't work!

darklady64 · 12/09/2019 23:10

I had a doozy - email arrives telling me I'm beautiful, wonderful, they have a total crush on me, but there's a problem! I need to lose some weight. Obviously selling some sort of diet thing.

It ended with the immortal words "Stop being pudgy and start being mine". Beautiful. Maybe it should be on Valentine's cards. Grin

Gluetap · 12/09/2019 23:21

Just checked my junk folder. So, apparently they can help me become “the master of my manhood’s hardness”, cure my tinnitus and Mark Zuckerberg wants to give me $1,500,000! Sounds so tempting...

Loopylou6 · 12/09/2019 23:26

Well I listened to a voice mail on my land line informing me that my internet account was about to be closed because it had been involved in illegal activity. I only had to 'press 1' and speak to their 'fraud executive' and all would be sorted

PennyNotSoWise · 12/09/2019 23:42

I resurrected an old desktop PC that hadn't been used for years (last with a dial-up modem, iirc) and the instant I got it online, ready to install Kaspersky on it, I got a trojan that locked the screen with a message 'from the Metropolitan Police'.

I had this, only it claimed to be Interpol. There was even a square at the top of the screen where they'd attempted to take a picture of me through the webcam, presumably so you think they have a mugshot, but my webcam was painted over in black nail varnish because I was already paranoid about hackers gaining access to it.

Told me they had detected illegal activity on my PC, and I had, IIRC, 72 hours to pay a couple of grand onto a voucher and give them the code, then they'd unlock my browser and not pursue charges Hmm And just in case I didn't, they were tracking my address and identity and would raid my home. It even said something like, if you're getting this message as the result of a virus, you'll be fined for not having adequate anti virus software Grin Dipshits, as if Interpol would resort to blackmail and give you 72 hours to possibly get rid of any evidence.

Tbh, it did scare the shit out me even though I knew I'd done nothing wrong. most of my music is paid for, thank you.

^^Just kidding about that last bit Interpol, I swears.

SkiingIsHeaven · 12/09/2019 23:47

I have had this.

Also the phone call saying I have errors on my computer and you have to type in 123letmein in the run box.

I had lots of fun with that one. I said wait while I switch my computer on. Then I keep working for a while then hang up. They always call back and I say sorry you disappeared so I switched my computer off. Let me switch it back on. When you have repeated that a few times they stop calling.

Frequency · 12/09/2019 23:48

I had the porn with with an old password. Oddly, the amount of bit coins they asked for was scarily similar to the amount I had in one of my freelancing accounts at the time.

I had a wee panic until I remembered that 1) I don't watch porn and 2) I don't have and have never had a webcam.

I changed all my passwords and thought nothing more of it. I have the same email a few times all with different amounts of bit coins asked for so I've decided it was an unsettling co-incidence.

CuriousMama · 12/09/2019 23:53

I got this.

I told friends last time I did anything dodgy on the webcam I wouldn't be recognisable now I'm older and bigger Grin so best of luck to them.

I was slightly freaked to see an old password in the title though.

MuseThalia · 13/09/2019 00:06

The FBI are after me apparently, I don't know exactly what for but I give them around $100,000 they'll sort it out for me ;)

DemiGorgon · 13/09/2019 03:12
