Has anyone sat a driving test in their own car?

I was supposed to sit my driving test on Thursday and it’s just been cancelled. I’m gutted. As it is, there are no free dates to rebook before the end of November and if I add my driving instructors reference to that, I can’t get a date before December.

I can drive, I just have a (recently expired) foreign driving license, and have never previously sat a British test. I was thinking that if my I can get my car test-ready then I can keep looking for cancellations and get a test date as early as possible - i’m not then reliant on my instructor’s availability.

Has anyone ever done this? I’m more comfortable driving my own car and it would make things easier for me.

Argh! This was meant to be posted in Chat. Can it be moved?

I did and I passed :)

NationMcKinley · 10/09/2019 14:33

Yes! I did. This was 25 years ago though......I don’t recall making any special plans. The examiner just shoved a thing on top it the car to indicate I was a learner driver. Good luck!

Yes, I did my test in my own VW beetle, many years ago. I had done so much practice in it, so felt confident. My husband had taught me, and I did a few lessons with a driving instructor, just before the test, also in my own car, which he was happy with.

RiddleyW · 10/09/2019 14:34

I did too

Navy123 · 10/09/2019 14:35

I did and it was fine. We were advised to get a stick on rear view mirror for the examiner but other than that didn't have to do anything.

PullingMySocksUp · 10/09/2019 14:36

I presume you’ve looked at this? Doesn’t look like you need to do too much. Sounds like a great idea.

Yep - passed in my own car 3rd time after 2 failures in 'proper' cars.
Do it!!!
You are more than competent so all should be OK.
Good luck

Yes I used my own car and didn’t have any driving instructor with me. I bought some little extra mirrors and put them on my wing mirrors (like the ones the driving instructors have). Passed first time no problems. Definitely use your own car if you have one!

Bumshkawahwah · 10/09/2019 15:45

Oh, fab! Thanks, everyone. I’d never heard of anyone using their own car before, so that’s great to hear.

Yes, I did. A very old Escort. DH taught me to drive, then I had some top up lessons from an instructor and passed first time. Obviously I had L plates on my own car. Can't remember if I had extra mirrors, but I don't think I did.

thenightsky · 10/09/2019 15:50

Oh... meant to say... my top up lessons by the instructor were also carried out in my own car, as it was a bit cheaper than using hers.

birdlawyer · 10/09/2019 15:53

I passed two weeks ago in my own car! I’d had it for two months and had all my lessons plus a lot of driving with DH, so I knew it so much better than my instructor’s car. Also meant I was confident driving it on my own after my test as I wasn’t having to get used to a whole new car as a brand new driver.

JustYourBasicDove · 10/09/2019 15:55

I did for my 3rd test and I passed Smile

11 years of driving later and I still loathe little zippy modern cars like the ones you learn in. Give me an elderly lumbering tractor-esque estate car or an old style landrover any day Grin

Funghi · 10/09/2019 15:56

Yes, I passed in mine. Had to show valid insurance and MOT as well as supply my own L plates.

Good luck Smile

PeterthePainter · 10/09/2019 20:20

I've known 2 guys do this and both were in your position - they each had an o'seas licence and were taking a UK test due to the time they'd been in the country. Both passed.

deste · 10/09/2019 20:25

My DD did and passed.

VioletCharlotte · 10/09/2019 20:31

Yes I did (20 years ago!). This was my fourth attempt and I passed. I felt much more relaxed in my own car.

Anotherusefulname · 10/09/2019 20:35

I passed in my own car, was over 15 years ago and all I needed was L plates and an extra mirror. And obviously someone to accompany me driving on the way and to drive home.

Bumshkawahwah · 10/09/2019 21:13

Pullingmysocksup- that’s useful, thank you.

Birdlawyer - did you have an extra rear view mirror? If so, where did you get it?
