Board game recommendations for 7 yr old

Isleepinahedgefund · 09/09/2019 21:23

She’s very clever, loves a game of grown up Monopoly (very good at it!). Can anyone recommend something else she might enjoy? I didn’t grow up in a board game playing family so no idea where to start... thanks!

Labyrinth
Dobble
Carcassonne
Junior Catan
Ticket to Ride First Steps

There is a company called Smart Games that makes 1 player games that my dd loved at 7 - we had Jump In but I think they are all good.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/09/2019 22:56

Mine love
Cluedo
Junior Scotland Yard
Sorry
A game where they travel around Britain by train visiting various stations (can't remember the name)
A similar one based on the London Underground

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 09/09/2019 23:04

Not junior catan. It has a second person bias thats hard to break (unless the second person doesn't work it out then everyone else has a chance.)

Yy to sorry/Ludo, qwirkle, Carcassone, the London game (the underground game mentioned above), the Great Game of Britain (the train game mentioned above), sushi Go, Dobble and Uno.

Look at Santorini, thats a fantastic game.

Travel qwirkle is super portable

Brainmaster is a good one, my 12 yr olds and 11 year old all enjoy beating me at it.

My DD really got into Cluedo from 8 so get that. Mrs Peacock is our most prolific killer! Prof Plum is still there but Mrs White has been replaced by Dr Orchid.
We have a game called King Domino which is good. Game of Life is another one.

jackparlabane · 09/09/2019 23:24

Dd7 likes Fluxx and Uno and dominoes. Also chess and Connect 4.

Carcassonne without using farmers works well.

tryingtobebetterallthetime · 09/09/2019 23:24

This thread got me thinking about a board game called Sorry! We played with it extensively as a family in the 60s and 70s. I thought it had disappeared but I just checked on Amazon and they have it.

We had such fun racing our pieces around the board and being competitive. As I recall it was easy to play.

thebakerwithboobs · 09/09/2019 23:35

Exploding Kittens although is a card game. Laser Maze also. Oh and Word Around!

thebakerwithboobs · 09/09/2019 23:36

Risk!!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/09/2019 23:41

Not a board game exactly but Blockus is good fun and a strategy game so needs thinking about. My DC loved it.

MeanMrMustardSeed · 09/09/2019 23:41

Definitely Qwirkle, but I have literally just bought a game on amazon for my 7 year old that was recommended on Reastie’s Christmas thread (llama one). It’s called Quadropolis and looks amazing. It’s under £17 at the moment reduced from much more.
Also, our best board game with the children is Ticket to Ride Junior. It is an absolutely brilliant game. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

SisterSistine · 09/09/2019 23:46

Favourites here are Ticket to Ride, Cobra Paw, UNO and Exploding Kittens. Worth checking if there are any specialist board game shops in your area, there is one near us and they love to recommend a new game.

WeeM · 09/09/2019 23:49

The junior ticket to ride is fab. I’m away to look up some of the other suggestions too...Grin

Joans3rddaughter · 10/09/2019 00:00

Draughts.
Dominos.
Card games, cheat, Pig. Adult teams up with a child to play in teams at Knockout Whist.

Hub95z · 10/09/2019 06:22

Kingdomino, 7 Wonders Duel (2 players), Dice Hospital, Lost Cities (2 player), Splendor, Railroad Ink, Planet, Photosynthesis, Ticket To Ride, Welcome To..., Imhotep, Gizmos, Dixit, Dominion...

There are loads. I create videos for parents who want to reclaim family time by playing board games together. They are all on my blog - along with a load of other articles, reviews and resources. Maybe you'll find this useful? www.thedarkimp.com/blog/

SushiGo · 10/09/2019 06:51

Oh no MeanMrMustardSeed I hid Reastie's thread so I would take a break from bargain hunting for a bit but Quadropolis has just fallen into my basket!

Looks fab!

Happyhusband · 10/09/2019 07:00

I second Jackparlabane. Carcassonne without farmers and then introduce the river and Abbotts. For quick fun we play Rhino Hero too.

Jessicabrassica · 10/09/2019 07:15

Labyrinth is seconded (or possibly thirded by now). 7yo routinely beats the parents at catan but really loves pandemic which is a collaborative game to save the world from infection. Also dobble (Harry Potter dobble is the current favourite), chess and bananagrams. I've just bought quadropolis given the discount - thanks to previoys poster!

reluctantbrit · 10/09/2019 07:38

I would be vary about junior versions unless the normal one is only for adults. If she manages the normal monopoly she can most likely do the harder versions with a bit of help or simplifying. I found DD outgrew the junior ones fast, we jut keep them when she has friends over and plays with them alone.

Games we have and are successful are Rummikub, Shut the box, Yhatzee, Ludo, UNO, Dobble, Settler of Catan for 2. we also have several Brainbox packs.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2019 07:43

Ticket to ride Scandinavia is good because that’s for 2/3 players.

Azul is similar to Quirkl (I was going to recommend that!) and has very pretty tiles.

Forbidden Island

MeanMrMustardSeed · 10/09/2019 13:43

SushiGo - nice try to get free from Reastie’s Christmas, but you’ll get pulled back in! That thread is awesome. I’m very excited about that game - it does look brilliant! Hope you enjoy it.

Septembersunrays · 10/09/2019 20:39

We don't like labyrinth.

My dd adores exploding kittens it's the out and out favorite.
Ticket to ride is brilliant.
Camel up is fun.

Bloomburger · 10/09/2019 20:59

DD 6 plays go fish which she thinks is brilliant and snip snap snorum which is sort of like UNO But with normal playing cards.
