So DD(9) - almost 10 - is having what seems to be a light period (brown, old blood).

We've had several open chats, she's read a couple of great books and have a great relationship - she's not worried or embarrassed to talk to me about things so all good.

She seems excited to be having one and taking it in her stride.

The only thing is - I am completely unprepared practically for this as I genuinely thought it was a good while off yet.

It's only been literally the last 3 weeks or so where I've noticed her hips being a bit wider, voice sounding more grown up and literally the very start of 'budding'. I thought we would be several months away! Eek!

I only have some fairly cheap sanitary towels in the house as I rarely use them, only tampons.

I will email her teacher tonight and pack her some spare pants and sanitary towels, but any tips for her dealing with it, especially as she's at primary school?

And recommendations for good, comfortable sanitary towels for 'beginners'?

Thanks in advance!

Get some period pants, google modibodi or thinx. She can wear them all day, change into a new pair to wear all night and then there's no pads to change. Much easier for her at school and better for the environment too.

I use ModiBodi and they’re great. I wouldn’t go back to pads now. They’d be perfect for her.

Second the period pants. Modi bodi are spendy but very comfortable and work really well - they have a teenage range. Cheeky wipes has similar at half the price but I haven’t tried those so don’t know how well they work.

Lillets teens range do a mixed pack of towels and tampons.

Brilliant, thanks all! ModiBodi sound amazing, I just wish they'd been available when I was at school!

You can get a teen range of pads. I find Superdrug always have them. Boots and our large Tesco never seem to have them in. The pads are shorter and narrower. My 13 year old finds them more comfortable.

Check if there is a sanitary bin in the toilets she uses at school. In my daughters school there was one in one P6/P7 cubicle for the girls who started younger.
