I didn’t know it was a thing until today. Do people really pay more than 50p for a 50p?

I’ve tried googling but not really sure what’s real or fake.

Is it just 50p and £2 coins and how do you know it’s rare?

The £1 used to be different every year

I collected coins as a child but we got burgled and they were stolen.

I do keep the different 50p coins now.
The older suffragette one is probably my most unusual one

CheekyFuckersDontGetPastMe · 07/09/2019 16:11

Oh that’s a shame!

I have a few 50p with a Olympic Games pic on them, just don’t know where to look to see which is rare or not.

I used to collect round pounds, never bought them though, just kept any different ones I found in my change. Managed to complete the set of UK capital city coins 2 weeks before they went out of circulation!

I collect 50p and £2 coins I find in change. I managed to get 4 Kew ones (yeah say that quickly for a giggle), they’re worth quite a bit now. I just do it for the hell of it

I used to collect the pound coins (poppy one is my favourite). Since the new pound coin was introduced to spoil my fun ;) I've started collecting 50p's instead.

I had a massive dilemma when they changed the pound coins as I'd always said it wasn't wasteful to collect them as they could always be spent but I couldn't let them go. I'd really like to find a way to display them nicely instead of them sitting in a drawer.

Sorry to hear about your collection superloud Flowers

Meant to add, I used to be treasurer of our PTA, great way to add to the collection, I'd just swap out any I'd not got.

I don't think there is anyway to get rich by collecting them though, there's only a very limited number of people who would pay over face value and even then they would have to be pristine

TeenPlusTwenties · 07/09/2019 17:07

I always check my change. I'm also a PTA treasurer so I get to check that too. Smile

The reality is very few coins in circulation are worth more than 50p. People regularly post them on FB selling pages but when you go onto Ebay and see what the coins actually sell for then it is rarely more than 50p-£1.

I like having the different 50p coins and just put them in a savings bank and don't think of them again.

smartiescereal · 07/09/2019 17:25

Dsis collects coins, no idea how much she has now ... She keeps anything odd or old or foreign so has dozens of 50ps, sixpences, farthings, paper notes (a pound note), lots of royal family things ... goes daft over them . Dunno what she plans on doing with them though .

ExpletiveDelighted · 07/09/2019 17:25

I collect the 50ps and while I'm not treasurer I help with lots of PTA events and swap them out as I see them. DH and the DCs look out for them for me too.

EskSmith · 07/09/2019 17:32

Expletive, my whole family, DH, dd's and dad bring me their finds. It makes their day if it's something I don't have :)

SunshineAngel · 07/09/2019 17:37

It's crazy really. My partner and I sell things on eBay (he's a registered sole trader) and coins are something he sells. People will pay quite a bit for certain coins, and if you have full sets it's even more. We regularly sell coins for around £5 and we only send them in a normal envelope with a second class stamp. But if people are willing to pay that, I'm definitely willing to let them!

caringcarer · 07/09/2019 17:38

I collected Beatrice Potter 50p's for grandkids but have not got Jamima Puddleducks.

TheHobbitMum · 07/09/2019 17:38

I collect coins and can spend a fair bit on rarer or proof coins, I don't smoke, drink or go out so my indulgence is coins Grin

It does help that I work in supermarket and have access to the safe to root through for rare coins Wink

Funnyface1 · 07/09/2019 17:42

My dh does. He's got quite a collection now, worth a bit of money (to people who are willing to pay for that sort of thing, which I am not). He's bought a few, but mainly managed to find them, he handles money at work.

FredaFox · 07/09/2019 18:11
