Do you listen to age ratings on toys?

Looking at getting DS some kenetic sand for his 2nd birthday but its says not suitable for under 36 months. Hes not one for putting things in his mouth. Hes not bothered on play doh.

I generally don't. It's all to do with small parts and covering themselves.

Things like kinetic sand I wouldn't worry about as I doubt they'll be left alone with it anyway

SoMuchToBits · 04/09/2019 18:26

I usually look at the lower age limit. But not the upper one. Playmobil 4-10 years? No way! Ds played with it until he was 15, and I'm still playing with it at 57! Grin

The 36 months thing is because testing is more expensive for under that age range so many manufacturers just don’t bother. I think anyway.

No, some of them are ridiculous. Almost nothing is allowed before 3 if you go by the labels. Even our crayons are apparently not suitable for my 2 yo, despite being big chunky non toxic wax crayons.

My dc are older now but I didn't have a hard and fast rule, surely you decide to by toy

Regardless of age guidance I wouldn't buy kinetic sand for a 2 year old, too messy and I don't think they'd know what to do with it.

Don't be fooled by them not putting stuff in their mouths at 2. Doesn't mean they won't suddenly develop a desire to toy chew at 3!
