Anybody had a passport renewed recently?

If so how long did it take?

In a bit of a panic as we are off on holiday in just over 2 weeks and just found my passport has run out.

My choices are - pay £75 and do online application which it expects to take 3 weeks, although a friend has just had one back in 5 days.

Pay £177 and be able to collect in person from a passport office which will take around 3 hours to travel to, all in all.

What would you do?

There’s a Twitter account that tells you the recent turn around time.

Will see if I can find it.

Sexnotgender · 03/09/2019 22:28

Adult renewal is 12 days apparently.

Account is @passportwaiting

RaymondReddington · 03/09/2019 22:29

Got mine done - hard copy application - checked by post office (£10 I think) and it was back within 8 days. Was surprised how quick it was.

It was a renewal and name change due to marriage.

Wintersnowdrop · 03/09/2019 22:29

I’d pay the £177 and go and get it, otherwise you risk not going on holiday.

Dominoz · 03/09/2019 22:31

I need to do mine and DS too... not urgent March 2020 but does it matter if you do before or after Brexit?...

PatriciaHolm · 03/09/2019 22:31

In person. Downside too high!

MaidenMotherCrone · 03/09/2019 22:35

DH did his a couple of days ago using the online service. It was back within a week. Given he posted off his old one (as per instructions) and forgot to pay postage I think it was flipping amazing.

Nightshiftmad · 03/09/2019 22:36

All very efficient I did it a few months ago they'll give you frequent text updates as it goes through the process. Remember you have to post the old one to them before it will be processed. It's delivered by courier. About a week it took. Very quick.

Burlea · 03/09/2019 22:36

Did mine on-line 20th August received back 29th August. And this included a bank holiday.

NatashaAlianovaRomanova · 03/09/2019 22:39

I did DD's online on 8th August & her passport arrived on the 16th

SquishyFishy · 03/09/2019 22:39

OH visited a post office on Thursday and used their online check and send service. Got email today that it's all done and is on its way back. Should be with us by Thursday

popcorndiva · 03/09/2019 22:41

Just done mine as I needed to update with married name. Took 8 days. Just got my babies done and has taken a week but recieved email today that it has been posted

Nightshiftmad · 03/09/2019 22:43

To answer your question I'd do it in person it's worth it for peace of mind there was no pressure when I did it so I would do the £177 it's good for 10 years 😁

PennyDreadfuI · 03/09/2019 22:44

DH renewed his a few weeks ago and it took less than a week. Even so, I'd still pay the £177 for peace of mind.

RingtheBells · 03/09/2019 22:46

I would get it in person or you will be fretting and stressed for a week or two and even if most only take a week or two, a few will take longer

CaptainJaneway62 · 03/09/2019 22:47

Did online application and got passport in 11days.
They won't process it though until they get your old passport so need to send that off next day delivery or similar.

twilightcafe · 03/09/2019 22:49

Did DS's passport online in July. Came back in 10 days.

Chottie · 03/09/2019 22:50

I did an online renewal (with a MN hand hold) in July this year for DH and me and both our passports arrived in less than a week :)

mossmurray · 03/09/2019 23:01

Renewed 2xdc's passport and it was 12 days from start to finish. Got their photos taken at Timpsons who send it for approval there and then. You get a code to input online but you know it won't comeback saying something is wrong with it.
I was very impressed with the updates and service

SequinnedSlippers · 03/09/2019 23:06

Couple of weeks

AnyFucker · 03/09/2019 23:07

I did the digital renewal in person at the Post Office and got a new one in 6 days

Pipandmum · 03/09/2019 23:11

I travelled 70 miles to get my son’s fast tracked (under 16 so couldn’t do the one day thing). I had to make an appointment and the first one was a few days away. It arrived four days later (so in all it did take a week). You could get lucky but I wouldn’t risk it.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 04/09/2019 00:02

Did mine online on June, took 15 days from pressing send to delivery.

Hedgehogrescue · 04/09/2019 00:07

I am in the same position and flying in two weeks time but I am not risking it so will do the application in person.

shinynewapple · 04/09/2019 07:48

Thanks all. Replies confirm my dilemma! A turnaround time of 12 days brings it the day before we go - and most people got one sooner. I can't risk it though can I? The 3 hours travel is door to door one way as my nearest passport office doesn't offer this service, but think I'm going to have to take a days leave and do it.

The ironic thing is that DS's passport also ran out earlier this year and I nagged and nagged at him as I was concerned he wouldn't get it done in time and he'd miss his planned holiday with his mates. Never even checked my own. Sad
