What is the app called that tells you what stars/planets you see?

I'm sure I've heard of an app where you point your phone at the sky at night and it tells you what stars or planets you can see, but I've already downloaded two and they're not showing me the actual sky I'm looking at.

Do I need the premium version, I couldn't see it mentioned? Or I'm downloading the wrong apps... one was skyarium or similar, the other maybe sky map ...

Any recommendations would be great.

I use sky view lite but I don't think it shows the actual sky

Metempsychosis · 31/08/2019 18:49

Star Walk

Adollop · 31/08/2019 19:00

Thanks I'll take a look at those.

Sky View Lite is free

BentNeckLady · 31/08/2019 19:02

Puniverse is great

Adollop · 31/08/2019 19:02

Ok, I had installed Sky walk before. It asks for my postcode but when I move my phone around what i see on my screen doesn't change, so it can't be showing what I'm actually pointing my phone at??

I can't find Sky View, lite or heavy ... I'm on android, is it just an apple thing?

Night sky?

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 31/08/2019 19:04

i have Google Sky Map on mine, that's fairly straight forwards.

Some of them are very complicated imo so download a few and see if you prefer one to another

some also have lock screens on, so maybe you did that with skywalk?

Adollop · 31/08/2019 19:04

No Puniverse either Sad

Try ‘pocket universe’

Blastandbollocks · 31/08/2019 19:10

Sky Safari?

Adollop · 31/08/2019 19:14

Ah, I think I've found the problem. Sky map says I've no compass or accelerometer so can only use in manual mode. Gutted Angry

My phone is a J6 ... I didn't realise some had compasses and some didn't.

NASA app?

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 31/08/2019 19:56

can you use google maps?? I'd have thought that a simple location would be sufficient for most sky apps

Stellarium is another, but that's just taken an absolute age to down load on my P20Pro so it might be too big for a simpler phone....I have no idea how advanced or otherwise your phone is mind you...and our internet is diabolical so it could just be that and not a big app at all!

Adollop · 31/08/2019 20:31

I tried Stellarium, again it showed me my location by postcode, but not what I was pointing my phone at.

I can use Google maps without problems Confused

I use night sky. It’s so cool!

MunsteadWood · 31/08/2019 22:10

Sky Guide! It's awesome.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/08/2019 22:17

I like Night Sky.

Adollop · 31/08/2019 22:28

Thanks. I'm guessing none of them are going to work if my phone has no compass or accelerometer.
