Tax and NI taken from summer job wages, Tesco

Hi, looking for a bit of advice. DS, 20, has just received his first pay packet from Tesco where he's contracted 11 hours a week and picks up an additional 6 hours or so a week.

They've taken tax and insurance off him.

Is this likely to be a 'first pay' mistake?

Will he be expected to put in a tax return to retrieve this, and am I right in thinking he's not due to pay any tax or NI as an under £12,500 (or whatever) earner?

I can't see anything that looks like a tax code, except 846/T1 on his payslip.

Anyone have any thoughts?

It's not uncommon to be automatically put on base rate tax. It happened to me 15 years ago, I just had to ring hmrc and it got sorted.

Get him to phone hmrc. He won't need to do a tax return.

NI is payable above about £162 per week, whatever your annual earnings.
The tax should be able to be sorted.

You can reclaim tax online. I thinks it's a p55 but if you google tax refunds the HMRC website comes up.

It's so easy even I did it!

As long as he’s on the right tax code something like 1250L then it’s fine and he’ll get a refund.

It’s emergency tax for the first month, there is no need to ring HMRC, it should be corrected next month.

My DD has worked for Tesco for 16mths and she had same in the first month, tax was refunded in second month. She does get NI taken off regularly though, so he could be the same.

It also happened to my son in his YII job, he had done a few hours work for uni so had to provide his P45 for that, then his refund came through in next pay slip.

Anyone else out there doing seasonal work keep an eye on pension auto enrolment. You get put in automatically and have to opt out with 3 months to get your contributions back. You also get automatically re enrolled at regular intervals even if you've previously opted out

Did he hand in P45 or New Starter Checklist when he started? If not he’s probably been put on a 0T tax code - easily rectified and once sorted he should receive a refund in his pay:

My Ds was written to by hmrc and just told he had paid too much tax and Ni when he started his apprenticeship. They pointed him to a webpage to claim it back.
They did the same for me when I changed job so think it must be an automatic system.
