DS needs to redo Maths GCSE - should we resist in November or take the year?

He will do it via college whilst continuing with his next steps, which is good but I'm not sure whether he should sit in November or take the year?

How do you decide? He missed the level 4 blue Hilton having had a lot of time off due to medical reasons and surgeries, so he missed a lot of teaching of topics, so I think he'd benefit from the year, but will that not overload him?

Argh!

I would encourage him to do it in November if you think he has a chance of passing. He’ll likely work twice as hard and get it over with. He can then focus on his new work.

Is it either or? I did mine in November, and again in the May. This was years ago though. If he can do it twice I'd definitely take it in November.

I had to resist my maths GCSE while doing first year college classes. To be honest I was glad I had the year.

I had time to build up my confidence in the subject again, the teacher was great, the class was small so plenty of support.

By time he goes to uni/starts a job nobody will care if he resat the exam, never mind when he did it.

I passed my resit and went on to get a 2:1 in uni (alas not in maths!). My job deals with a lot of finance/accounting funnily enough!

Whst mark did he get? Which exam board? The college I work at only offer November re sits for those within 8 marks

LewisFan · 28/08/2019 19:50

Sorry been really busy ....

He scraped a level 3 - definitely not within touching distance of a 4, unfortunately.

I'm now thinking of getting him a tutor to help him and waiting until May - he'll need all the help he can get!

Ds 1 is in same position but got a level 3 in English language. Not sure how far he was off a 4 but he’s adamant that he’s retaking it rather than having it remarked Confused He’s dyslexic and throughout the last 2 years has been working at a level 3. Unfortunately he was 2 marks off a level 5 in his mocks so I think school felt their job had been done. He’s going to sixth form college in town rather than the school one - apparently they’re better set up for retakes and provide more tuition than school would have done - 3 sessions a week apparently. Also he reckons they’ll assess him and decide whether a November or may/June resit is more advisable.

Oh I'd definitely get him to re do the year. I really doubt he'd get up to a 4 in just a few weeks if he's only scraped a 3.
