How do you deal with cold callers on the phone?

Im on holiday with a good book and the sunshine.
I was rudely interrupted by my phone ringing, anyway it was a cold caller asking for me by my name, I said I wasn't myself, he wanted to ask me some questions and asked if that was ok, I said that I charge £1 per question and does he agree to my terms, he kept saying I need a yes or no, so I kept repeating myself that I charge for my time and that charge was £1 per question and does he agree to the charges, this went on for just over 3 minutes, I won as he put the phone down on me but he got 3 minutes free of my life.
How do you deal with them without being rude.

Just don’t answer the phone to numbers I don’t recognise

Not sure you’d “won” as it sounds like you also wasted your own time there!

dontticklethetoad · 23/08/2019 12:16

I say "no thank you!" in a cheery voice and put the phone down.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 23/08/2019 12:16

I say "No, sorry, bye."

RoseMartha · 23/08/2019 12:16

When they have said initial spiel I say no thank you and hang up.

LadySybilPussPolham · 23/08/2019 12:17

Just hang up or don’t answer. You’re not under any obligation to engage!

inwood · 23/08/2019 12:17

I don't answer.

GrandmaSteglitszch · 23/08/2019 12:17

And immediately hang up, obv.

MashedSpud · 23/08/2019 12:18

Same as Shirley I don’t answer numbers on my mobile or home phone that I don’t recognise.

I check numbers online to see if others have had experience with them then block them on my mobile if they are classified as harassing or dangerous.

PickAChew · 23/08/2019 12:18

Take my number off your list. Goodbye.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/08/2019 12:19

I say "No thank you, and please don't call again" if they try to sell me something or sometimes I say "You are a horrible person, hope your mother is proud of you" if they call with the accident nonsense or some other scam.

Fraggling · 23/08/2019 12:19

I am on Telephone preference service what company are you calling from

They hang up

7Worfs · 23/08/2019 12:19

I ask in a stern voice ‘How did you get this number?’ repeatedly until they hang up.

6demandingchildren · 23/08/2019 12:19

I don't have much else to entertain me in life lol
My husband just answers yes to everything they say, he once had a very rude girl on the phone who got rude as his yes conversation progressed.

The amount of calls I get has increased a lot lately. I try to keep my phone going for the whole work day (12.5 hours) and this wasn't a problem until recently when I find 7 or 8 missed calls from cold callers on my phone when I check it at break time. I have blocked about 200 numbers if not more

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/08/2019 12:20

I don't even answer the phone to people I know so cold callers get no chance.

TixieLix · 23/08/2019 12:26

If it's double glazing or something similar I just say No Thank You and hang up quickly. If it's one of those scam type calls where they tell you you're about to have your broadband cut off, I'm probably not that polite Grin.

DappledThings · 23/08/2019 12:28

Most of them are scammers telling me my internet is about to be cut off/I'm due a payout for an accident/there's a virus on my PC etc. I say "Bollocks" loudly and put the phone down.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/08/2019 12:29

When they ask is this 'Mrs. Clouds' I usually say tell me what you want and I'll tell you if its Mrs. Clouds and then often they hang up.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 23/08/2019 12:31

Mobile phone I rarely answer to unknown numbers. If they are genuinely trying to contact me they can leave a message.

I once had to listen to a spiel on GAP insurance when I bought a car on finance. It was a condition of the finance (to listen to the spiel, not to buy it) . I put the phone down on the carpet when the lady was talking and walked away. I don't know how long it took her to realise.

ElizaPancakes · 23/08/2019 13:18

I just hang up. I used to be polite and say I wasn’t interested thanks, but now as soon as I know it’s not a company I have any dealings with, I just put the phone down.
