At my wits end and want to cry, scream and don't know what to do!

Long story short, someone in our block is smoking weed.

I am a grown up. Poeple smoke it. Fine. The smell/usage of it is so strong that it is coming into my home on the 4th floor - they are on the 2nd floor. My husband, son and I have to breathe it in.

We have spoken to the consierge whos had a word, it's been escalated to the management company who's had a word, the landlady (the person is a tenant) has had a word. We've been advused, and have called 101 and had officers out. Yesterday 2 came out and were stunned by the strength of the odour.

I am at my wits end because no-one can prove for definite it is that resident even though all information points to them. (It started when they moved in, no other new residents, always happens when their car is in etc).

Last night the police knocked and they wouldnt come to the door. They had sprayed loads of air freshener and used joss sticks (which they tell the consierge they use) and as such, the police couldn't say the odour was definitely from their place.

This has been going on for about 4 months. Almost daily.

I am so brow beaten and feel like I am stuck. I own my place and over the last 10 years we've had very little problems. I dread going home. Feel like everytime I do it involves a battle to speak to the police or management co for nothing rally to be done. I understand why they can't - I totally do but I am so frustrated and frankly deflated.

I got home last night, the whole building stunk. Saw the resident. Had strong words. They as usual denied it. I even said look if you want to do it, bloody do it outside!

Does anyone know of anything more I can do? Except sell my home...

I'm fed up of being the only one in the block to actually report it, yet everyone nods and agrees its terrible and needs to stop.

I am fed up of feeling like I'm asking for help and nothing is being done.

I don't know what to do.

I've no advice to offer sorry, but I'm surprised the police haven't been more proactive. They've asked twice to search a friend's of mine's house purely because there's a smell of weed outside her house (that we think comes from a plant she has in her garden that definitely isn't cannabis).

Also, last year, our whole street could smell weed and it turned out someone had rented a house and had a cannabis factory going in it.

The only thing I could suggest it keep on at the police and maybe phone the council? I feel for you because it's an awful smell.

Be1atrix · 22/08/2019 15:05

I have no advice but wanted to say I feel your pain. It drove me to absolute despair in our last place. I hope the police will deal with this- some people are so selfish.

I HATE the smell. Hate it hate it hate it.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 22/08/2019 15:05

The police wont do anything because they aren't dealing

mammabella1 · 22/08/2019 15:11

I second the council - could you argue antisocial behaviour....? Environmental health? No personal experience but that sounds just as annoying/damaging/polluting as excessive noise.

poolblack · 22/08/2019 15:13

Literally nothing you can do. It's awful. I can't open my kitchen window because my neighbour smokes it in his garden; he has places his garden seats outside his kitchen window which is feet away from mine Angry

The police have no interest in someone smoking cannabis.

AnotherEmma · 22/08/2019 15:16

Keep a detailed log of all incidents.
Keep reporting to the police and landlord.
Also report to the council as antisocial behaviour.
I think the only way it will stop is if the landlord evicts them, and if there is a record of antisocial behaviour that will help the landlord's case.

you need to water your garden from an upstairs window ;)

HeyMonkey · 22/08/2019 15:27

Am I the only person who likes the smell?

I don't smoke, but the smell has never bothered me.

IndianaMoleWoman · 22/08/2019 15:31

We had similar in our old flat and eventually just moved. There was a vent system for the whole block that went to everyone’s bathrooms and it’d come in through there every day.

The smell is the only reason I hope it’s never legalised, although it almost definitely will be. And then the smell will be everywhere, all the time, and you won’t even be able to complain to the police (not that they do anything anyway), you’ll literally just have to suck it up.

poolblack · 22/08/2019 15:33

Oh god please don't keep reporting this to the police. It's just an absolute waste of resources.

Diagonalli · 22/08/2019 15:36

also don't smoke it but like the smell although it does make me sneeze

ooooohbetty · 22/08/2019 15:37

The smell makes me feel sick. It's vile. Have you reported it to your council? Give them a ring and see what they say? I think that's really anti social behaviour if it's going into your property. Keep a diary of how often it happens.

SillyMoomin · 22/08/2019 15:37

We had this. We reported daily, logged each time with the local police station, built up daily complaints for about a month. They sent round a community PSCO or whatever they’re called, who knocked, but the guy refused to open the door

It took the entire block turning against the landlady eventually to evict her tenant to get it sorted. Horrid situation though. Who blinking block stank

You have my sympathies op

Just keep reporting, be “that” annoying person that rings the management company daily, twice daily, so they’ll eventually get so fucking fed up of you they’ll put pressure on the landlady to evict

HollowTalk · 22/08/2019 15:41

Do you think they are growing it?

I'm amazed the police just left it if they didn't open their door.

Soontobe60 · 22/08/2019 15:42

Is it the smell you object to or the actual smoking of it? If this person were smoking tobacco, what would your response be? Would you object more if they were smoking heroin?
I just don't see this as being anti social. I think you're wasting police time.

Bravelurker · 22/08/2019 15:42

The thing is if they take their smoking outside, say in their balcony or garden, it will disturb others because of open windows so there is no realistic place to do it without offending someone. Short of getting them to quit (unlikely), I don't know what to suggest.

AlrightOkNow · 22/08/2019 15:51

Smoking cannabis is not ASB no matter how annoying it is. It's a police matter which they won't do much about. Do you live in a council block, housing association block or is there a management company? If so, you could perhaps ask them to write a strongly worded letter as it's likely to breach the lease agreement in some way (no smoking inside the block due to fire risk).

QuestionableMouse · 22/08/2019 15:58

@HeyMonkey it's a migraine trigger for many people (me included)

cjt110 · 22/08/2019 16:01

To answer a few questions... The smell is in the communal area so difficult after it has ruminated all day for the police to identify exactly where it is coming from. Or like last night, the communal area stinks of it but they've lit a lot of candles and shit so no actual odour comes from their door.

Ive spoken to the management co til Im blue in the face. Because the person is denying it, they can't do much. Of course they will bloodywell deny it.

The odd waft we've had in the post but this is coming up from the second floor INTO my house. Into my son's bedroom and my lounge, and bedroom and kitchen. I have headaches daily because of it.

I'm not naive enough to think they will stop but at least sod off, outside or other place to do it. They have had complaints from 4 residents today because of the smell from yesterday.

They claim they are a nurse and wouldn't do that. Yet it's only them that livces there - the smell is always when they/their car is in.

It's the sheer lack of decency and respect for anyone i take um-bridge to.

That and the fact that my home stinks of fucking weed!

@ILoveAllRainbowsx No I havent and hadn't thought of that avenue. I also have medical conditions which are both neurological so headaches/migraines are not good for me.

Surely there is weed in their flat? Is that not evidence enough? Can the landlord not make a visit or get the police to try again until they get an answer?

Surely if the smell is that wrong the flat must be wall to wall full of weed.

On another note, is the smell harmful? I don't think your Dc is at any risk.
