Two nights in the UK, where would you go?

Would love to hear your suggestions for a two-night city break in the UK this autumn. Anywhere except London!

Requirements: relatively large city with good shopping. Within fairly easy reach of an airport. Ideally some fun cultural things to do as well.

We want a couple of days to wander around the shops and explore a city. What would you recommend?

Cardiff

Edinburgh or Glasgow
Belfast if you are up for a short flight

mumguiltrearingitshead · 22/08/2019 09:35

Come to Glasgow

LiverpoolMiss · 22/08/2019 09:38

It does sound appealing mumguilt, I've never been there!

York and Leeds. York for the sightseeing one day, Leeds for shopping the next.

Span1elsRock · 22/08/2019 09:41

Bath. Lovely lovely city, good shops, great restaurants and full of culture. Some really good hotels too. Not far from Bristol airport.

JamieFraserskneewarmer · 22/08/2019 09:42

Bath - great shopping and for culture you have the Roman Baths, the Abbey, the Assembley Rooms, Jane Austen Centre and a boat trip up from Pulteney Weir is good fun

RezCowgirl · 22/08/2019 09:44

Bath

78percentLindt · 22/08/2019 09:44

Nottingham or Derby. Good shopping centre lots of cultural stuff. Set up for touristy things as well. Ģreat public transport including East Midland airport
Only downside will be freshers week.

PaddyF0dder · 22/08/2019 09:47

I’d favour Edinburgh over glasgow. And I say that as someone who lives in (and loves) glasgow. Edinburgh is a prettier, more touristy city. If you only have two days, go there.

Propertyofhood · 22/08/2019 09:49

I would go to Manchester but that's because it's pretty much the only UK city that I've never been to and its becoming a thing to me that I really need to go before I'm on my death bed with my only regret being that I never went to Manchester! 😂

However, if you have been to Manchester, then I would recommend Bristol or Bath based on what you have said.

Propertyofhood · 22/08/2019 09:50

Oh, having just seen your username, I'm guessing you have been to Manchester Grin

Unevenbeard · 22/08/2019 09:50

Another vote for Bath!

LiverpoolMiss · 22/08/2019 09:53

Actually I haven't @Propertyofhood, the name is just random! I went there as a child but remember nothing of it.

I've explored Bristol a lot, and have visited Edinburgh a few times (could go again though).

I mean I've been to Manchester as a child, not Liverpool (was there last year, it was a fabulous place for a city break and the people were really lovely.

Not sure about Nottingham at the moment. The castle refurb isn't finished yet and I think they are still working on the shopping centres too. Will be great when it's all done though. Leicester is OK for shopping.

York, Chester, Durham?

CottonSock · 22/08/2019 09:58

Shrewsbury is lovely

imclaustrophobicdarren · 22/08/2019 10:00

I recently went to cheater with my best friend for a long weekend. We did a spa hotel but did 2 days shopping and 1 eve on the razz! It was great!

imclaustrophobicdarren · 22/08/2019 10:00

Chester**

melissasummerfield · 22/08/2019 10:01

York is lovely and lots to do

Plainandsimple · 22/08/2019 10:01

Norwich. Beautiful cathedral, great mix of independent and mainstream shops, lovely market - if street food's your thing you'll be in heaven, lots of bars & restaurants to choose from, good range of hotels either in the city centre or easy reach, airport nearby. If you have a car the coast & Broads are also within easy reach. But it is compulsory to go to the macaron shop in The Lanes - they are incredible!Smile

Fantababy · 22/08/2019 10:01

Definitely Glasgow if you've not been. Great shopping, a fair amount of culture and lots of nice restaurants and bars.

Propertyofhood · 22/08/2019 10:01

Ah I see!

If you've been to Bristol a lot then I would definitely recommend Bath though if you haven't been, it's got everything, great shops and loads of cultural stuff and is small enough to explore easily. You could also spend a few hours at the Thermae Spa place as well.

blackpinkinyourarea · 22/08/2019 10:03

Do not go to bloody Derby, it's crap. The Peak District on the other hand is lovely but you said city. I would vote York or Bristol, both lovely cities.

Jsmith99 · 22/08/2019 10:05

Bristol or Edinburgh. Loads of culture, sightseeing & shopping in both cities.
