Can I cope with a much bigger phone?

I have an iPhone SE. I like it, but it's getting old. I quite fancy upgrading to an iPhone XR, but it is much bigger than the SE. The SE fits nicely into my pocket. It also fits into the phone holder bit in my very old handbags which did not foresee the arrival of smartphones. Will I forget these details and cope with a bigger phone...?

Nobody cares about my really boring question... Sad

The bit about the pocket in handbags annoys me

SumAndSubstance · 21/08/2019 17:27

Yay, thank you for answering! Do you mean it annoys you that a big phone won't fit or that it annoys you that I care about this? Wink

I have an XS, I love the screen size but it is an absolute pain for taking anywhere, it doesn't fit in pockets easily, the sides wear badly and I basically have to carry it everywhere.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 21/08/2019 17:28

Ah. You need a new phone and a new handbag.

win/win 👍🏻

I have a big iPhone It is so much easier for me to see stuff than the old screens. I don’t put it in a pocket though.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 21/08/2019 17:29

I just upgraded my ancient iPhone 6 to a 7.

I considered the Plus but it was just too big for my jean pockets, coat pocket and the zipper in my pram organiser. Too much of a risk of dropping it if it was any bigger than the 7!

Nicknacky · 21/08/2019 17:29

Is there not a version of the X that is smaller? At least that’s what my H was telling me earlier in the week after we had this exact conversation.

abitoflight · 21/08/2019 17:31

I have the SE too
My family think it's funny that I have such an old fashioned phone but I like the size for same reasons as you

PrincessSarene · 21/08/2019 17:32

Every single time I’ve upgraded my phone I’ve ended up with a bigger one, and each time I think it’s going to take ages to get used to it... but it usually only takes a week or so and then my old phones seem tiny! I think if the bigger screen is useful then you’ll get used to the size pretty quickly (I have an XS for reference). I got a slim line solid clear plastic cover for it which takes all the knocks so the phone still looks good.

SumAndSubstance · 21/08/2019 17:33

I think both the X and the XS are a bit smaller, but more expensive. Also the XR apparently has the best battery life, which would be good. I think you might be right though that the size would be less horrifying.

I have an XS Max and it fits in my bra perfectly!

MyMelodie · 21/08/2019 17:35

Yes the original iPhone X and the iPhone XS are about the size of the iPhone 6/7/8 (little bit bigger) and the iPhone XS Max is similar to the size of the iPhone 6 Plus except it is all screen. The XR is between the two. So perhaps an iPhone X or XS would be a more manageable size?

SumAndSubstance · 21/08/2019 17:37

Rockbird, I think your bra might be a bit bigger than mine Grin.

MyMelodie, I fear that might be the case. Is now the time to confess that I also really want a yellow phone..?

Nicknacky · 21/08/2019 17:40

They do it in yellow?! I need to look at that.

SumAndSubstance · 21/08/2019 17:41

Yes, and red. And blue. But the yellow one looks especially lovely (and massive...)

OP posts:
MyMelodie · 21/08/2019 17:43

Well I love yellow, I think you will get used to the size pretty quickly!

noblegiraffe · 21/08/2019 17:43

Go to the Apple store and try them out. I ended up with an iPhone 8 as the X just felt too uncomfortable in my hand.

SumAndSubstance · 21/08/2019 17:44

You agree the yellow might be worth the compromise? Grin

I have an old Nokia, it fits in my bag and no-one can track me or spy on me. However if I want to use the internet I have to use something else.

I find the new phones are all too big for my little hands. I do have one but I don't use it for the reasons above. Some of them are so heavy too.

nopixelsfound · 21/08/2019 17:45

Former SE owner here too. I found it was the heaviness of the XR combined with the larger size that I struggled with. It felt very cumbersome. In terms of carrying it didn't fit in any of my pockets other than my large winter coat pocket which I also found quite inconvenient.

The battery life also wasn't that brilliant in my experience (disclaimer: I only kept it a week), it was better than the SE bit not as good as I expected from all the raving.

I ended up going to Android as the price of the XS put me off too much, though it did seem easier to handle.

lyralalala · 21/08/2019 17:52

I went from SE to 8 last month. It’s bigger, but not ridiculously so. It still annoys me though as it’s longer than my pockets. It’s also not as sturdy, my SE has been dropped and toddlered (is that a word? It should be) for 6 years and has a couple of small scratches. My 8 had a tiny crack in the screen after less than a week. It feels flimsier.

If it hadn’t been for the fact I’m sure my SE was dying I’d have gone back.

Rockbird · 21/08/2019 17:53

I'm pretty sure my bra is considerably bigger than yours SumAndSubstance Grin

MamaFlintstone · 21/08/2019 17:53

I’ve got an XR and have got used to it really quickly. It still fits in my jeans pocket (however I have a massive arse, not sure if pocket size increases with size! Blush) I’ve got a toddler DD so end up carting a massive bag around everywhere anyway.

SumAndSubstance · 21/08/2019 17:54

This is all really interesting - thank you! I fear that my beautiful yellow phone is slipping away... Perhaps I'll hold onto my SE for a bit longer. It has served me well so far.
