I have a friend coming over from the usa in a few months time - he doesn't want to use his cards over here for the charges reason which is far enough but also doesn't want to carry around a large amount of cash on him.

I'm thinking of something like travellers cheques but in a card form - does anyone know if such a thing exists. so in my head he would get the card go put all his cash into that account and use the card to spend on. if that makes sense all I can find is travellers cheques though?

Yes it's called a travel card. I think you can get them in the post office.

You can get pre paid cards at bureau de change. Would that be a possibility? No idea what the charges are.

I dont like travellers cheques. Just because when mun and dad used them, it always took ages to find somewhere to change them. That was more because they werent organised though.

I would say prepaid or travellers cheques. Just check charges for prepaid.

We use a Starling card when abroad - transfer money on to it and use it without any charges. Don't know if there is something similar in the USA.

Cant he ask locally in the USA? Ask his bank what they would recommend?

I have used a currency card in the past but can’t recommend them. Maybe we were unlucky but we found it hard to use and if you have any money left on it it is extremely expensive to get it back.

Revolut is a really easy card and app to use. You can transfer money in & out easily, convert between currencies, and withdraw cash.

The post office money card is really good, easy yo top up via the app.

I used one in the USA, saved a load if hassle

There must be a US equivalent.

Fairfx do different currency cards

Travelex money card. We used one when we went to America. Just like any other card, except you put the money on it in advance

We have a Lyk card which does this. Think we got it in Tui, worked absolutely fine in the states.

monzo!!!! i love monzo it has been my life saver travelling. It doesnt charge you any abroad fees. Order it online super easy and it will arrive within 1-2 days. You dont have to go to the bank or anything you just activate the card with the app. You can just transfer money from your normal bank over to your monzo account.

I've recently seen quite a few shops with "Monzo Cards Not Accepted" up. Might be worth checking how common this is.

@milk ive used my monzo card in over 20 countries and all over london and never ever had anything like that, thats very odd

@Nottobesoldseparately - thinking about it I think they were mostly cafes, but one was definitely a gift shop. I noticed the signs because I thought "wtf is a Monzo Card" 😁.

Revolut card. Absolutely love mine. Use it to buy stuff online now as well as for international use.

The post office travel card. I use mine all the time it's great. I even use it when I'm at home! X

Dh has a Revolut card for this kind of thing. Really easy to use.

I love Monzo but I don't think they offer no abroad fees to new customers.

I've also got a Revolut card. Haven't used it abroad yet but used it no problems over here.
