My cards won't go into cashpoints

Has anyone ever had this happen? I have 2 debit cards and today have tried both of them in about 6 different cashpoints but they won't go in!! The cashpoint just won't let them in! Phoned the bank who were stumped and couldn't find any reason for it. They're sending new ones but I am just wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else????!!

Is the chip bit damaged?

AngelasAshes · 19/08/2019 15:49

You wouldn’t happen to keep your debit cards in your phone case would you? Over time the EM can damage the chips.

canidothisalone · 19/08/2019 15:49

No they both look fine

Sorry to be thick but what does EM stand for? Guessing the M is magnet??

I've literally had my bank card strip wiped 5 times by different phone cases! The ones with the magnetic bit to keep it closed. The chips should still work so if you go to a supermarket you can get cash back etc

EM= electro-magnetic
Phones have a constant EM field around them that over time can corrupt the Information stored in chips.

AngelasAshes · 19/08/2019 15:56

Yes, they also wipe the magnetic strips on debit cards. That happens faster than with the chips. Hours versus months.

Same can happen with hotel key cards. DHthas a phone case with a magnetic clasp and it messes up hotel key cards every time.

Wow. Thanks for this info. Will keep in purse from now on. I was totally bewildered!

Another reason not to carry bank cards in phone case...theft

Yep, happened to mine and DPs. Turned out it was because DP had been keeping them in his phone case - it wrecks the magnet inside the card (and I wondered why it wouldn't let me use contactless on the train when I had money in there!!)

Nationwide computer system is down, might be why
