Best Caribbean island to visit?

violashift · 19/08/2019 12:06

Looking for a holiday for next year.

DH says Dominican or Jamaica but I have heard that they are either awful or unsafe.

Has anyone been? Do you just have to stay in resort?

What about the others?

Aruba is absolutely beautiful and out of the hurricane belt.

Wehttam · 19/08/2019 12:21

Aruba for sure, perfect weather and beaches from heaven. Plenty to do, good shopping and eating.

Orangesox · 19/08/2019 12:30

Aruba or Curaçao get my vote!

I wouldn’t go back to Jamaica if you paid me - I’m sure many many people love it, and I had some wonderful holidays there, but during my last trip I felt incredibly unsafe at times, far more than I’ve ever felt unsafe in a lot of the car more “dangerous” South American countries.

It would have to be August when we go.

Punts Cana is nice in the resorts but sadly just as with Jamaica it is quite unsafe outside of them. Aruba is very safe, if you can afford it then St Barts, Mustique, BVI etc are beautiful and safe too. Aruba is great option for an all rounder.

Personally I wouldn't consider Jamaica. I have visited a number of the islands and loved St Lucia and Nevis but it's been a while since I've been.

peachypetite · 19/08/2019 13:17

Barbados is generally considered one of the safer. My auntie went to the Dominican recently and said you don't leave the hotel it's not safe.

PestoCaffeinisto · 19/08/2019 13:18

Necker is probably the best Caribbean island to visit 🌴

Foslady · 19/08/2019 13:23

We’re currently in Jamaica and are loving it. Yes there are bits to avoid but we haven’t felt in danger once.

missmarplesapprentice · 19/08/2019 13:55

100% Barbados for us. We did lots of research as we wanted an island where we could explore/hire a car etc. We had a great time just chilling on the beach/pool tbh but went into Bridgetown, and around the island on our own and felt very safe. Also outside the hurricane belt!

Hoppinggreen · 19/08/2019 13:57

I’ve been to Barbados and St Lucia and preferred Barbados

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 19/08/2019 13:57

My Mum has been to a few parts of the Caribbean and Grenada is her favourite. She found it safe and very friendly.

Aragog · 19/08/2019 13:59

We've really enjoyed our visits to Antigua. Very safe to drive around and explore by yourselves.

mysweetlove · 19/08/2019 13:59

My vote for St Lucia, absolutely amazing. We stayed at the Sandals Grande St Lucian and it was beautiful.

frangipanflowers · 19/08/2019 14:00

Mustique is amazing, pricey but worth it. ☀️ 🏝

timeforawine · 19/08/2019 14:00

We loved St Lucia and Greneda, both very beautiful with lovely people

MakeLemonade · 19/08/2019 14:03

Antigua or Aruba for me - St Bart’s and St Kitts are supposed to both be lovely (although more expensive I think?).

Wouldn’t holiday in Jamaica or Dominican Republic.

7Worfs · 19/08/2019 14:05

First of all decide if you want big waves (Atlantic ocean) or calm, shallow waters to splash about (Caribbean sea).
Personally I hated Punta Cana, too wavy.
I loved Cayo Guillermo in Cuba.

I’ve heard Grenada is fantastic if you want a quiet holiday.

PennyGold · 19/08/2019 14:07

St Lucia was beautiful! I'd definitely return.

LikeTheFruit · 19/08/2019 14:10

I've been to St Lucia and Tobago (not Trinidad). Tobago was better is every aspect. I did like ST Lucia but it was not as safe, especially if you headed into Castries after about 5pm.

Vesperia · 19/08/2019 14:10

Visited Barbados & Antigua - both fantastic but very different. Personally we preferred Antigua but it is much poorer than expected

twoheaped · 19/08/2019 14:11

Dominica.

beethebee · 19/08/2019 14:11

I live in one of the places mentioned upthread. Caribbean islands are very different from each other, so give us a bit more about what you're looking for?

All-inclusive, watersports, bars, nightlife, beaches, hiking, culture etc...

MNOverinvestor · 19/08/2019 14:12

Grenada is great - feels like a proper island but very safe. Anguilla is absolutely gorgeous - best beaches I've ever seen - but expensive to get to (and most of the hotels are very expensive too). Petit St Vincent is a very, very lovely private island.

Youngandfree · 19/08/2019 14:14

It depends on what you want?? But I would say Barbados if your looking for all inclusive tourist spot. If your looking for a bit more of a “real” Caribbean, getaway type place then I recommend Bequia.
