Vegetarians .. what do you order from Indian restaurant

tgifridayx · 17/08/2019 06:13

I'm a new vegetarian and before I made the change used to order the most delicious chicken tikka masala from our local Indian restaurant.

I don't know what to choose now! Any suggestions ?

I’m not vegetarian but Indian veggie dishes are my favourite!

Bombay potatoes
Tarka dhal (lentils)
Channa (chickpeas)
Cauliflower bhaji
Mixed veg curry
Sag aloo (spinach & potato)

Yum

Minai · 17/08/2019 09:40

Aloo paneer
Vegetable dansak
Indian restaurants are great for veggie choices. You can usually get any of the curries with veg instead of meat.

fiorentina · 17/08/2019 09:49

Paneer tikka, Dhal makhani if they have it or some kind of black dhal.

I'm not a vegetarian, but my favourite dish from an indian restaurant is brinjal bhaji. So delicious!

Sexnotgender · 17/08/2019 09:55

Chana Puri is delicious as a starter.

Lived in in India for 4 years.
Mmm kathi paneer tiki rolls... Omg delicious.
Chana is amazing but I love chickpeas.
Sag paneer mmmm
Jackfruit byrani is amazing if u can find somewhere that does it.
If you liked chicken tikka then vegetable mixed tika is lively if it's big Chunks. Or tikka paneer.
Roast aubergine and potato curry I love but its spicy.
Mmmm mm now I want a curry!

Sexnotgender · 17/08/2019 10:07

God it’s 10am and I really want curry now.

Yip! I immediately went and googled curry recipes after reading this thread Grin

Wheretheresawill1 · 17/08/2019 10:12

Mushroom madras

Qwertyguerty · 17/08/2019 10:18

I'm a big fan of mutter paneer, gobi bajee and chana masala. Basically if it has chickpeas, cauliflower or paneer you can't go wrong!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/08/2019 10:35

I was reading a menu outside one of our local curry houses (it was shut ) they had a V marker next to some dishes..........

including Mushrooms filled with spicy lamb , topped with breadcrumbs Hmm

(I wish I'd taken a picture , that well known vegetable 'lamb' )

JapaneseBirdPainting · 17/08/2019 11:09

This has made me plan Indian tonight. Aubergine and mushroom jalfrezi and naan thanks to Mr Aldi.

badgermushrooms · 17/08/2019 11:17

70 it must have been the Vegetable Lamb of Tatary.

Has anyone said paneer yet? Grin

PurpleDaisies · 17/08/2019 11:23

Fish masala (if you eat fish)

Vegetarians do not eat fish. Hmm

I usually order saag aloo, aloo Gobi, veg samosas and pakoras, channa or Tarkington daal, Bombay potatoes, mixed veg bhaji...

TweezerMay · 17/08/2019 11:40

God I know what I’m having for tea now

Indian takeaway is brilliant for veggies (been one for over 30 years and it’s my favourite takeaway). Dhal has amazing restorative qualities if you need a pick me up. It’s like a hug in a bowl. With some delicious bread. Yum. And, as everyone else says, anything with paneer. My local does paneer tikka shashlik, big chunks of paneer and vegetables on a skewer, covered in yogurt and spices and cooked in a tandoor at approximately a billion degrees so the edges are charred and delicious 😋

mysteryfairy · 17/08/2019 14:06

There is a pattern for takeaways to have korma, dhansak, jalfrezi etc etc in various meaty/fishy guises and then just a selection of vegetable side dishes. I’ve never been refused when I’ve ordered vegetable version of any standard curry in any outlet.

Indian street places like dishoom mentioned upthread do have fabulous choices but tend to be quite different from standard high street takeaways.

Vasya · 17/08/2019 14:13

Paneer butter masala - it's absolutely lush!

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls · 17/08/2019 14:21

Ooh, yum yum yum.

I go for three side dishes:

Chana (chickpea) masala,
Brinjal (aubergine) bhaji,
Mushroom bhaji.

Plus a couple of poppadoms.

Delicious, and not too carby/bloaty.

Teddybear45 · 17/08/2019 14:23

I’m Indian. Indian restaurants (important; not usually pakistani or bangladeshi restaurants) usually all have a vegetarian menu. I love aloo gobi / veg sizzlers / veg manchurian.

TanselleTooTall · 17/08/2019 14:36

I always prefer the veg dishes, to the meat.

I get anything along the lines of...

Okra
Aubergine
Cauliflower
Chickpeas
Potatoes
Spinach

I usually order a Kashmiri naan or plain chapatti, no rice is needed, but I like poppadoms and all their accompanied dips to go with it.

Luuurvley!

TanselleTooTall · 17/08/2019 14:38

Ah sorry! Peshwari naan. Not Kashmiri.

Oblomov19 · 17/08/2019 14:40

Paneer tikka is my fave.
Cauliflower anything, eg curry, is fab.

tgifridayx · 17/08/2019 14:49

This is amazing !

I am excited to revisit my takeaway menu with all the new knowledge.

Thanks so much for sharing all your favourites!

Happy takeaway everyone !x

Aloo gobi curry .. it's lovely

spiderlight · 17/08/2019 15:40

Something mild with paneer - muttar paneer if they have it, or paneer korma. Bombay aloo as a side dish. Peshwari naan. Yum.
