Where to go for a long weekend in November

DH & I have kindly been offered the chance to go away for a long weekend in November by my DM and DB who will together baby sit for us. DS will be 16 months and it will be our first time away alone since he arrived.

We'd like to go somewhere no more than three hours flight from Heathrow or Gatwick. It needs to be November as that's when we can get the time off work. We don't want a long transfer from the airport when we arrive.

I think I'd like somewhere where we can do a day of sightseeing and a day relaxing (spa?). I'm torn between heading somewhere like southern Spain for more mild temperatures or just accepting it will be cold and staying in Northern Europe for a shorter journey. Apart from Paris and Lisbon, I've never been to a major European city so have lots to choose from. And actually wonder if a small city not a capital would be better for a short break.

Where would you go?

Malaga or Seville would be fabulous.

Another good choice would be Malta. Valetta is great for sightseeing, lots of interesting history, and such a small island, you can see a lot of it in a few days, and there are some nice spa hotels. You could also probably manage a day on Gozo.

Would also be very affordable, last November Ryanair were doing return flights for £10, cheap bus travel if you don't want to drive Eating out very reasonable and great if you like Italian food as lots of Italian restaurants as well as Maltese.

Make sure you have 6 months left on your passports in the event of a no deal Brexit.

Seville? Pretty mild most of the year...

Or accept it will be chilly and go to somewhere like Bruges for cosy coffee shops etc.
If you can cope with the cold then Gothenburg is fab but expensive for drinks.

Munich? Lots to see and some lovely spa hotels and pools in the city.
Salzburg? Beautiful city and day trips to the beautiful lakes and mountains nearby.
Palma? A bit warmer with lots to see and do.

Can't recall how long it took to fly to Fez or Marrakech but both are super in November.

NachosTrafficantes · 16/08/2019 16:58

I was going to suggest Marrakesh or Fez. Fabulous riads to stay in and in Marrakesh www.lesbainsdemarrakech.com/en/reservation-spa . It's fabulous.

It won't be hot but should be OK for t shirts or light jacket.

Palma in Mallorca - also fab for a wander - great food.

Seville/Granada/Malaga/Valencia - been to all of them in November and had bright blue skies and able to have a glass of wine outside.

Alternative is go for European and hope for clear blue skies and maybe snow.

My birthday is in November and often go away for a long weekend. Most succesful has been southern spain, morocco, Tallin and Berlin.

Least successful - v cold and rainy was barcelona and paris.

Highly recommend Tallin out of all of those if you don't mind cold. Small enough not to be overwhelming, great food and bars - lovely hotels.

I'd choose Palma or Alicante. Loads to see in both, but they're quite compact so you can get round a lot in a day or two .

Have you watched Rick Stein's Long Weekends on Iplayer? Some great ideas on there. I particularly liked the look of Cadiz and Porto.

Can I come? Grin

Fly yourself to the isle of man and stay in port Erin or head for the channel islands.
