Depending on how old the baby is, and if you have a place near you, how about pottery with handprint on? We did this for grandparents for xmas when ours was about 1 and was successful (I think).

Also, start building up a collection of photos throughout the year to get printed into a calendar each Christmas. My parents still love a grandchildren calendar even though they are all grown up now.

You could make a lovely patchwork cushion or blanket out of baby's clothes?

If she likes a figurine Willow tree do a grandmother one.

If old enough wee one could paint a picture. My ds was 7 months old when it was my dad's birthday and we put a dust sheet on the floor and got some paints out and carefully let him get to work. A practice or two first then I framed a piece of the "art". My dad loved it.

I started doing the calendar a few years ago when I realised I had stop printing photos. It's an annual ritual now. My brother sends through pictures of his boys and we pop in the odd group shot of things we've done over the last 12 months. The DGC always have a photo in the own birthday month and we include pictures of them with my parents. My parents keep the calender each year and I know that one day I will get the whole collection back again.

I do similar but with a photo book. Every November I go on Vistaprint and upload mine and DH's iPhone photos and turn it into a book. (Also means PILs' present is sorted st the sand time!!)

You could do a 'DC's first month' book or similar.
