August hols abroad 2020 - drivable and warm but not hot!

I’m thinking about hols for next summer, having just spent a week in very hot southern Spain with small children...(never again!!)

Where can we drive to from the UK (North/Midlands) that will have better weather than the UK but won’t be too bloody hot? We’d like either beach or lakes for swimming, and will probably either camp or self-cater, in a house or maybe a mobile home on a Eurocamp-style campsite.

We’ve been to Holland by ferry before, which was a very easy drive (ferry from Hull), but could go considerably further with a few overnight stops. We also like northern France and have been to Germany once or twice on the train, although never driven.

Where shall we look? Is Slovenia an insane drive?! Black Forest? Sweden? Italian lakes/mountains? We drove round Lago d’Idro and Iseo a few years ago and loved it, but is it too much of an epic drive?...kids will be 7 and 4.

Any ideas much appreciated!

How much time?
How much do you like driving?

We've just spent 2 weeks camping in Norway.....that was a bit of a drive.

Denmark?

The Vendee. Drive to Portsmouth then take the overnight ferry to St. Malo. The drive to the Vendee takes 3 to 4 hours. We stayed at the Eurocamp at Port Bourgenay with children from toddlers to early teens. Lots to do including a lovely beach and beautiful weather.

Hi chona - we certainly don’t mind driving but I guess the less time spent on the road the better. Denmark feels achievable maybe, although I know it’s fairly pricey. (I liked Copenhagen but was a bit freaked out by the lack of old people or youths - where do they send them??)

Did you take your own camping gear with you?

Did you take your own camping gear with you

And food as well!!

I also looked at Northern Germany on the coast - looked some very nice spots there as well. Probably ok warm but not Spanish hot.

Suppose it all depends what you want to do on holiday - the Alps around Lake Annecy are lovely.

I am already planning next year - but I don't mind the miles - and keep the costs down by always self catering.

The Loire or loads of bits of France really. Take the eurotunnel. We like Huttopia sites.
