Hive mind - help me identify this children's book

I know you can do this Smile

Probably published within the last 7 years
Aimed at girls aged maybe 8-10
Has a lilac cover

Plot is a young girl, maybe 10 who has recently moved house, isn't happy. The house is a bit unloved/ramshackle. She's not getting on well at her new school.
(possible there's a school play?)

Befriends a mysterious lady who lives in the woods. The lady makes her tea when she visits. The lady/witch counsels the girl about her school/friendship issues. My DD thinks together they have to lift a curse?

Random - the author had a baby a couple of years ago or so, as we looked her up on twitter when my daughter read the book.

Can anyone help? I thought the author may have been Abi Elphinstone or Abie Longstaff but it appears to be neither of those.

Wondering if anyone in the evening crowd can scratch this itch for me?

Sophie and the Shadow Woods?

If you don’t get the answer here, try asking in the forums on Abe Books - they are good at tracking down forgotten books.

@piglet81 thank you but that’s not it - although a very plausible suggestion having loved it up :)

@sdtg thank you for that suggestion, I’ll check that out too

No worries. Hope you track it down - it's so frustrating when you can't quite remember!

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 12/08/2019 21:57

Is it the Millie Keith book series?

piglet81 · 12/08/2019 22:00

Oh, is it The Secret of Nightingale Wood by Lucy Strange?

Ribenaberriesgowoo82 · 12/08/2019 22:03

That sounds likely Piglet!

strawberrie · 12/08/2019 22:06

It isn’t the Secret of Nightingale Wood or Millie Keith - it’s a contemporary setting I’m after. More of a “frothy”, modern look and feel to the cover design.

I’m very grateful for the efforts though!

I was going to say it sounds just like How to Catch a Witch until I got the the end and you said it isn't that author! Are you sure it's not that?

TheVanguardSix · 12/08/2019 22:08

It's not The House With Chicken Legs?

strawberrie · 12/08/2019 22:15

Hurrah The Investigator! It is exactly that book, I’m not sure how my searches of the works of Abie Longstaff failed to turn that up, so thank you for persevering Smile

And you’ve led me to the sequel, which my daughter had in mind was about a werewolf but is actually called How to Bewitch a Wolf.

Thank you everyone x

What an apt username @TheInvestigator Smile

TheInvestigator · 12/08/2019 22:27

Funnily enough, it's a character in a book!
