What the hell Google?! *Trigger warning*

I visited Shrewsbury Prison the other day and was checking something the ex prison warden said as I'm not sure I believe him. So I typed in "does hanging cause" waiting to see if it came up with (immediate) miscarriage as the ex warden claimed and the attached was the first suggestion. Wtf is wrong with the world that this is the first thing that comes up. I feel so sorry for the younger generations that are exposed to these things via the Internet. I'm in my 40s and never would have connected the two events and who in their right mind would?

The guardian article

www.theguardian.com/society/2019/jul/25/fatal-hateful-rise-of-choking-during-sex

The women killed by men who use "sex game gone wrong as an excuse"

wecantconsenttothis.uk/aboutus

There was a thread in feminism about it if anyone want to read further.

Michael Hutchence was depressed. It was Paula Yates, herself not the most stable crayon in the pack, who started saying he might have been playing a sex game by himself but afaik it was actually suicide.

Anyway, OP, I'm sure googling hanging+ miscarriage is morally righteous compared to googling hanging + ejaculation.

Vasya · 09/08/2019 23:54

I think questioning whether hanging causes instant miscarriage is much more disturbing and upsetting than asking whether it causes ejaculation.

K1ssIt · 10/08/2019 01:12

I didn't realise that Fuma, I was young at the time and must have only seen/heard the autoerotic asphyxiation news stories.

TheSheepofWallSt · 10/08/2019 01:22

The instant miscarriage thing I’ve read about before when I was researching for a documentary I was working on.
I think there was quite a famous case where it happened, or was rumoured to have happened?

In any event, this is a deeply strange post. I don’t understand it at all.

RevSeptimusHarding · 10/08/2019 01:36

I think you are talking about the law as it stood in the 18th century when a woman could "plead her belly" (that was the term used at the time) to escape hanging. I know of no case in recent times where a pregnant woman had been given the death penalty and I am very doubtful of what you have been told.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 10/08/2019 02:13

didn't link auto erotic stuff because I was not thinking about sexual thrills but capital punishment. Strangulation for kicks is different to hanging by executioner

But google as omipresent as it seems doesn't know what your thinjing about you've just given it the word hanging it could be: hanging to commit susicide, hanging for autoerotica, hanging by exicutioner, it could even be hanging up fairy lights, hams/meats to be cured or your washing out to dry. All very different things but the same word. Just because you were thinking about by excutioner google doesn't know that it doesn't have a chip in your brain that so it automatically knows which context you want to search.

Tbh if you'd said i was searching for hanging i would think the most searched context would be for either suicide or kinky auto erotica not hanging as in the death penalty as i doubt many people are seaching for such a niche subject.

Your moral outrage is sort of weird given what you were typing in.

Women could suffer a haemorrhage after a long drop hanging which could leave blood on underclothes and be misinterpreted by amateur prison guards (we'll put any suggestion they were getting pleasure from such events to one side as it's hardly an advertisement for Pritis Passion these days). Edith Thompson rings a bell. After her they were made to wear rubber knickers.

Certain in modern times (not quire sure if that's appropriate since we are talking about the death penalty Hmm) all executed criminals have a post mortem carried out. There's a copy of Ruth Ellis' in Professor Keith Simpsons book on forensic medicine. It's very clear she was not pregnant - and that a specific check was made.

Here you go OP, a whole Wikipedia article dedicated to the topic en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_erection

wheresmymojo · 10/08/2019 10:47

Just reading the Wiki article...was this the most unfortunate translation ever?

"In The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon relates an anecdote attributed to Abulfeda that Ali, on the death of Muhammad, exclaimed, O propheta, certe penis tuus cælum versus erectus est (O prophet, thy penis is erect unto the sky).[10] This understanding of the anecdote, however, is based on a mistranslation of the Arabic source by John Gagnier, who translated Abulfeda's Life of Muhammad into Latin. The English translation of the Arabic source should read: "In one account, ʿAlī, may God be best pleased with him, was called upon, while he was washing him [the Prophet], to raise his gaze to the sky."
