Help! No electric and supplier is saying they are not my supplier!

So I have no electric but no power cut in the area, I checked. Scottish power (that I have my gas with) are adamant my electric comes from EDF, EDF are saying no it’s Scottish power! How can I get it sorted?

Look on the last bill ?

dementedpixie · 09/08/2019 12:37

www.uswitch.com/gas-electricity/guides/who-supplies-my-electricity-and-gas/#step2 have you just moved in?

BarbaraofSeville · 09/08/2019 12:40

Has it been cut off due to non payment/bill mix ups or a fault with your supply/in the area? Who you pay the money to and the mechanics of your power supply are not directly related.

Have you had any letters etc? If not, you should contact the company who manages the supply of electricity in your area - for example, mine is:

cms.npproductionadmin.net/power-cuts

If you aren't in the North East of England maybe google 'name of area power network' to find your local equivalent

slipperywhensparticus · 09/08/2019 12:40

Who have you been paying?

IAskTooManyQuestions · 09/08/2019 12:43

Wht does it say on your key ? or your direct debit?

ScreamingValenta · 09/08/2019 12:43

If we have a power cut, it's the network provider we have to contact, not the company we pay the bill to. It's possible for the power to go off in one house only - it happened to one of our neighbours - some wiring just outside their house had deteriorated and had to be replaced.

ScreamingValenta · 09/08/2019 12:49
  • the relevant contact details should be in the small print on your bill somewhere.

Use this

Thanks everyone, turns out it was EDF but they had an error in my address listing! But after all that they reckon it’s not a meter or supply problem. I’m on a pre payment meter and there’s £9.70 in there so definitely not a finance issue. Checked all the trip switches, turned them all off and on again. Nothing. So now I’ve called my HA who say someone “should” be here within 24 hours. Tbh it’s times like this that make me glad I rent. I’d hate to have to try and get an electrician and pay goodness knows how much! Although my HA aren’t fantastic when it comes to repairs etc. I no boiler for nearly a year a couple of years back!

hope they turn up soon OP

Asta19 · 09/08/2019 15:23

Thanks Helena. No sign yet! My DD went out earlier and came back with a load of candles as she knows what the HA are like!

So I’ve just popped on to vent, so please excuse me while I do so! HA finally just came. Turns out it’s a problem with supply into the property. They tell me to call my supplier. I do that with my ever dwindling battery and they tell me it’s a national power problem and they can’t do anything Angry They refuse to send anyone out so I call national power who say someone will come at some point, but who knows when! What’s the betting that when they finally come they say they can’t fix it and refer me back to bloody EDF again. If that happens I am going to make a massive complaint to EDF as I called them hours ago and they sent me all round the houses.

Now apparently big power cuts have hit loads of homes across London but I don’t think mine is part of that as mine happened at 9am and I called national power first who said there were no power cuts here at that time. Arghhhh.

And meanwhile your food is slowly going off.

Thecrown3 · 09/08/2019 21:21

It’s been on the news all day op that there’s power outages all over the country.
I would guess that your property is caught up in this.Have you checked if your neighbours are in same position ?

Asta19 · 09/08/2019 22:02

I’m on my last 3% battery now! I live in a converted house, my house is 2 flats. Downstairs has electric, everyone in my road seems to have electric. It’s just me! So I don’t think it is a power cut issue. It doesn’t make sense that literally only 1 person in half a house would have this problem. I just had a massive online chat argument with EDF, they told me to report it as an emergency tomorrow! I said how should I do that with no phone or internet. They said “well you’ll just have to go to a neighbour” helpful! I will definitely need to Chuck out all my freezer stuff. By tomorrow it will be 24 hours at least. So I doubt any of it will be ok to eat after that. I wouldn’t mind if someone would just take responsibility but no one will and I just don’t know where to go from here.

OP posts:
Wildorchidz · 09/08/2019 22:04

Could you ask your neighbour to take your freezer food maybe? And also charge your phone?

HelenaDove · 09/08/2019 23:22

bump.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/08/2019 03:36

Oh how awful OP. Do you have a friend or relative you can go stay with, although I suppose you need to be home to let a repair person in?

You may be due compensation from the electricity supplier:

www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2014/07/compensation-for-power-cuts-to-increase/

Your home contents insurance may cover you for loss of freezer food - take photos of anything you throw away just in case.

Well it's finally fixed and it was a meter problem so I am going to lodge a complaint with EDF and claim the ruined food from them. Given I called them the first time 2 hours after I lost the electric and they refused to come stating it wasn't a meter problem! And I am going to change suppliers. I'm just glad it's back on now, you don't realise how much you rely on electric until you don't have it! My neighbour did kindly charge my phone for me anyway.

MumbleLumble · 10/08/2019 13:08

No advice but just wanted you to know I feel for you op. I live rurally and we get power cuts constantly. You don't realise how much you rely on electricity until it's gone.

HelenaDove · 11/08/2019 03:03

They should have bloody listened to you in the first place OP Was watching Channel 4 news earlier They were talking about the big power cut and how it could be prevented from happening again. K. Guru Murphy actually asked whether power could be re routed so homes and offices could take the hit rather than the travel network. Its 2019 FFS.

DoNotBlameMeIVotedRemain · 11/08/2019 03:55

Do you have a landline? It's good to have a very basic plug in phone with wires you can use during power cuts. They don't cost a lot.

I'm glad you got your power back on.
