Need to stop half way to Taunton!

Hi ladies,
We are travelling from Cheshire to Cornwall (Padstow) the weekend after next and want to stop somewhere overnight on the way to break up the journey.

I was thinking we could stop in Taunton for the night cos it’s about half way and I’ve found a family room in the Premier Inn there for a reasonable price!

Thing is, I want to go somewhere for the day which is halfway to Taunton. I was thinking Longleat Safari Park or the Wookey Hole but these seem to be taking us out of the way!

Does anyone have any ideas? I have a 10 and 13 year old by the way!

I'd stop over at Bristol and have time there. Plenty to see and do for older children.

Wookey Hole isn't that far off the M5. Longleat is further. Nowhere is going to be just a couple of miles off the M5 so you will need to travel a little bit but Wookey Hole isn't a long way though you'd need to go there first before you got to Taunton and either go back to M5 or just use an A road to Taunton.

Is Taunton really half way? There are roadworks on the M6 between Sandbach and Birmingham which are slowing things down quite a bit. You could stop slightly further north eg Gloucester and go to Slimbridge or Cirencester.

Are you going to continue on the M5? If using the A303 there is Haynes Motor Museum and Fleet Air Arm museum (Yeovilton), both near Yeovil.

I did think about Bristol and going to the zoo but my brother in law lives there so have been a few times already!
I will look at Cirencester and Slimbridge, thanks for the recommendation. Do you know if there are enough things to do for a day there? Xx

Have you been to Wild Place? It's only just off the M5 near Bristol Cribbs area and the new bear walk through is really interesting.
