Why is the TV Going on a Bear Hunt so depressing?!

Toddler DS adores the book so we decided to dig out the Channel 4 adaption for him on the planner. I had forgotten how downbeat and depressing the ending is on the TV adapt! What is the story with the poor bear at the end?! Is he lonely, is it something to do with the loss of the grandfather?

I don't know but it's just finished and DS turned to me and said 'I don't like the story!' after being obsessed with the book for weeks! I always read it in such a jolly voice too.

Poor old bear.

I rarely like the animated versions of the kids books, they never do them as I did and it ruins it for the kids.

My gruffalo was quite camp and theatrical not slow and scary. Same with room on the broom. I hated reading bear hunt the book but like you did it jolly. I can't remember what happens in the video but I know I watched it at the time and didn't like it.

I remember liking the 1990s adaption of Beatrix Potter but then I think they just read the stories.

I have to say I'm not particularly keen on the TV adaptation no. And yes I do read the book jolly. But my daughter loves it

But I do love Gruffalo and Room on the Broom short films.

It was awful wasn't it.
Like they'd never really got into the book.

It was first shown on Christmas Eve one year. My DS went to bed in tears, just what you want on Christmas Eve! I was not impressed

Completely agree! I love the book and thought the tv adaptation was very depressing. I won’t be showing my DD as she loves the book and I don’t want to ruin it for her.
