Just handed in my notice because I can’t deal with one individual at my job.

I have 2 part time jobs which equate to full time hours in different departments in the same organisation.

I enjoy both jobs.
In one there is the most hateful, nasty, manipulative individual that I have ever had the misfortune to come across.
Lots and lots of complaints about this person to management from lots of staff.
I can easily avoid all contact with this person, do not speak to them at all. See them occasionally.
Management know to not allocate me with them .. ever. I refuse to work with them.
It’s all fine, does not present any problems for management.
However, they have just promoted her.
This promotion forces me into regular contact with her.

I cannot and will not deal with arseholes any longer.
I’ve written and sent my notice but not said why.
I will meet with my manager this week and tell them verbally.

I’ve been granted increased hours in my other job.
I’m not of the option that my resignation will make any difference at all to anything, I probably won’t even be missed. That’s fine but ffs why are these people tolerated and they ARE everywhere you go these people, everywhere.

So fed up, I liked that job but I’m just not willing to allow anyone to cause me misery any longer.

I’m a dick aren’t I.

Can the horrible colleague be charming in moments? It's amazing how unpleasant or incompetent people can advance in their careers so easily. I suppose a thick skin helps.

If more people were able to take a stand like this then management would surely take notice.

Repeatedly gone to various management and complained, aired concerns, many in tears.
Unfortunately I don’t think anything in writing.

I have never complained to higher management I’ve just dealt with it in my own way.

Instead of dealing with it, they promote it. She is going to be 100 times worse with promotion too.

Why on earth didn't you put that in the resignation letter? Send another one tomorrow, explaining everything.

I have a similar problem. Always told how great I was will be fab assistant director. One of my peers who is lovely but a terrible manager and very flaky is about to get a non advertised promotion that I would have applied for.

I am so livid and demoralised and the worst bit is that part of the new role is managing me and other senior colleagues.

I am job hunting. Nothing is going to change.

I don't want her sacked I just don't want her promoted unfairly, nor do I want her to be my manager.

I won’t have any contact at all in my other job.

I didn’t it it into my resignation letter because I want to see boss face to face and didn’t want to jeopardise future job prospects.

I worked with someone like this once. Out of a department of 6 people 4 left because of her, leaving the two of us. She was unbearable and management knew as she had threatened me and the others had said the reasons as they left or transferred but they said she'd been there too long and was too expensive to let go!

I switched my hours so I had minimal time overlap with her and then eventually found another job. She would have been insufferable with a promotion so I would be doing what you are doing. My replacement was being trained in when I left and she bullied him mercilessly. It was awful to see. This was in 2001 so I've no idea what became of the baggage. She also bragged about how she physically bullied her dh Shock

If you and others have never complained - which you seem to say - then what is higher management supposed to do about it? You haven't taken a stand - you have cut and run. Which I am not judging, because sometimes that is the best decision people can make for themselves. But it is your decision and it is what you have done, so complaining that other people - "management" - haven't done anything is rather much of the pot calling the kettle.

Sorry, but it takes formal complaints to "blot somebody's record" - or are you suggesting that managers should randomly exercise prejudice against people on the basis that some people kind of complain, but not really? It's not that I don't believe you, but based on what you are saying here, if management had taken "action" there were no witnesses willing to support the allegations.

It’s so demoralising isn’t it.

I’m not interested in promotion myself, I am interested in the right people getting it.
I can’t believe she got the job when they know how 60% of the staff have had issues with her.

I have done this I decided that dreading going to work every day and coming home and bursting into tears, was just too much. It got so bad that I left without another job to go to.
I was onto a hiding to nothing as this person was best buddies with the Manager, and making a complaint was just turned around on me and made matters worse.
I felt a sense of satisfaction when I heard that they had got temps into cover me, one lasted 2 days then refused to work with her, the second lasted a day!
She ended up going long term sick.
I soon got a lovely new job, with really nice colleagues.

I’ve been in my job for 30 years and love it but I’m now looking for work elsewhere due to our new hideous upper Manager. She’s not even in our office but she’s such a nasty bitch and belittles everything, tries to make us look incompetent and generally would throw all of us under the buss happily that I don’t want to even deal with her anymore. I’ll be sad to leave but I’ll let them know why. Wouldn’t mind but HR clearly know how bad she is as they checked on us after she took the roll. Her reputation proceeds her.

We have an individual like this in our office, others have been told how to handle her by management.
Surely she should be told her attitude is not appropriate but apparently not Hmm
I'm putting in my notice soon, I'm not the first and I won't be the last.

I left my job because of a bully (others did too) best thing I ever did. Bully still there still causing issues still staff leaving I'm sure it'd be cheaper in long run to get rid of people like this than having to recruit and train staff.

I have let her off the hook and I’m fucking furious with myself for doing it.
Without written evidence nothing can be done, people don’t want to put their heads on the block. For me I found my way of managing my issues, avoidance.
I didn’t need to muddy the water with official HR involvement.. that’s not to say I wouldn’t of push came to shove.
Anyway, it’s done. I’m out of there.

there are people like this everywhere, I used to think they deliberately got promoted as a way of getting them away from people but sadly we still have to put up with bullies, liars, manipultive and lazy colleagues. you are definately not being a dick, your own welfare is more important and if you have guaranteed extra hours in the other department you've nothing to lose. go to work in the future with a smile on your face knowing that you've left that all behind and don't need to see or speak to her ever ever again. don't waste precious time and brain cells wondering why she got promoted or how anyone will manage, they will sit up and take notice when they've got no staff left and yes I would discuss this with your manager and in a final exit review if you get one.

sounds like my last employment, i quit because of someone, i made a formal complaint to area manager as the management didnt help and they decided not to pay me, im now in the process of a tribunal, luckily for me i have all evidence, all i got was x almost lost her job... my reply shame she didnt then! the place i worked for lost one person day before me, then someone else 4 days later and someone else yesterday so thats 4 members of staff in less than 4 weeks. now they have been left in a position they will have no staff when the remaining staff return to college and uni. all they had to do was deal with the issues. i wont post too much detail as i know the manager is on here, although i dont care as she was half the problem always moaning things didnt get done when all she done was sit in the office eating or sleeping! calling everyone lazy but she was the worst!

Oh, I can. I see this all the time. My employer actually headhunted someone who has a reputation in our sector for psychopathic levels of bullying and for destroying staff morale. You don’t work in a university or the NHS, by any chance, OP?

Mine was NHS too!!! no surprises there. Are you sure she hasn't been promoted sideways? that seems to happen quite a lot in my experience. she was awful, not even particularly good at her job either.
