I found out I was pregnant this weekend via home resting kit, and I have a doctors appointment tomorrow. What can I expect? Thanks

well, the point is,... OP could just ring the surgery and ask?

And then cancel the Dr appt if it isn't actually needed?

seems a waste of time to go there only to be told to self-refer?

Megan2018 · 06/08/2019 16:19

How do you know they didn’t tell her to book it? You normally have to tell them what it is for when you book so I expect they already know why she is going and if it wasn’t necessary they’d have told her.

I rang mine to ask what the process is to book in with a midwife and they were the ones that said we make you a GP appointment first and the GP will then refer you. I didn’t just book a random appointment and there is nothing to suggest the OP did either?!

Never saw a GP when pregnant - in Scotland there was/is a big campaign to self refer to the nearest maternity unit. I’m surprised there’s such a variation across the UK - surely it’s a waste of a GP appointment/ resources.

I was asked if I wanted to be pregnant. My previous GP appointment was to seek a referral to the fertility clinic 🙄. Then told to phone midwife who I saw at 10 weeks.

I only went to the GP first with DC1 but that was purely because I found out I was pregnant at a routine GP appointment Blush. I booked in with the midwife directly with my other DC. The GP literally just books you in with the midwife AFAIK, you can do it yourself in most trusts.

You don’t need a drs appointment.

Phone and ask to see a midwife.

RedCrab · 06/08/2019 17:38

With my first DC, me and DH went to the GP together, all excited and ready to get started with whatever would happen.

Which was absolutely zero bar referring us to the midwife team Grin

I don’t know why DH came with me - I think we were just so excited and it was so momentous.

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2019 17:40

He congratulated me and told me to book an appt with the midwife.

Cyclemad222 · 06/08/2019 18:01

IME the doctor looks startled, advises you to steer clear of Camembert and tells you to book in with midwives

First midwives appt is also very boring form filling Grin

Nothing happens other than passing your details on to the right people and checking you’re taking folic acid. I only went to the doctors because I needed to arrange early scans due to previous ectopics.

Gp doesn't see you in my area.

You pee in a pot and hand it in at reception. They send it to labs for a pregnancy test then when they confirm you're pregnant they pass the details to the midwife who calls and takes date of LMP and books a home visit for when you're around 8 weeks.

CrispSandwiches19 · 06/08/2019 21:30

Gp has to do referral here.. As they now do t have midwifes on sore they're at a 'hub' so they book with a triage midwife then they book you in.

Beofwr it changed when I had dd 18m ago. U just rang the surgery and booked mw yourself.

Even though the system changed I managed to get the same midwife

I got a huge cuddle and a big squeal. But this was after 5 years of infertility, loss and 2 rounds of ivf, all of which she'd helped me through. Then straight referral to hospital/consultant as multiple pregnancy.

I also had to see her at 38 weeks pregnant with twins as they didn't want to leave me a week between check ups and it was Christmas so limited clinics. She saw me in the waiting room and announced loudly 'bloody hell youre enormous. Let's see if you'll fit' as I waddled into her small room. God I loved her.
