Found this egg sac/cocoon thing in my cellar. Wise people of Mumsnet - Does anyone know what it is? And do I need to be afraid?! 🦗🐛🕷️😱

Looks like a dried out old hyacinth bulb?

How big is it? It looks like the back end of a dead bird!

longearedbat · 05/08/2019 18:48

Could it be an abandoned wasps nest? Or the nest of a solitary wasp or bee?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 05/08/2019 18:49

Owl pellet?

Just scoop it up in a plastic bag and bin it.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 05/08/2019 18:50

It's not a wasp nest, BTW.

RunsForGummyBears · 05/08/2019 18:51

About 2 1/2 inches long. It looks like whatever it was are some of the box and attached what looks like a cocoon or whatever on it. It isn't papery like a wasps nest.

I tried a reverse image search but am only getting pictures of baby turtles. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Could it be full of baby caterpillars? Do you get moths/ butterflies in cellar?
I saw something similar on a bush once. It was caterpillars.

LazyFace · 05/08/2019 18:53

I'd have taken it apart by now.

RunsForGummyBears · 05/08/2019 18:54

display it's been binned, I just wanted to know if I need to be concerned and look to see if there is more/do heavy duty cleaning/whatever.

It's not an owl pellet as there is no way a owl can get in the cellar.

lazy I'm too squeemish to do that, but it's probably the only way to know what it is

wow it's really cold and damp down there, I've never noticed any incects or even spiders down there. Usually, all the fun stuff is on the attic! 🤣
