How do you explain putting a cat to sleep to a 4 year old?

I think I might need to explain this to my DS soon Sad

Obviously I'm not going to mention going to sleep but how do you explain it?

I’d say the cat is very poorly and in a lot of pain and won’t get any better so the doctor thinks the best thing is to help him die so he doesn’t suffer any more. I’d tell him that all living things die eventually and sadly cats do not live as long as people.
What you tell about what happens after death is down to your beliefs.

How old is your DS?

Say he'll have an injection that takes all his pain away too. Sorry about your cat :(

Ds2 knew our cat was at the vet and was very sick. I told our older boy that she was going to be put down before I went to be with her when that happened (he was 10 and could understand the concept of euthanasia). With Ds2 I just told him that she'd died when I got home.

I'm sorry that you're going through this. It's very hard. I was glad I was with my cat though - she went quietly and peacefully. Definitely knew nothing about it.

By the way I had to tell my four and six year old their dad had died suddenly so found the simple basic truth works best.
Do not minimise his sadness if he gets really upset.

Tell it how it is in words he can understand . My 6 year old came to the vet when our beloved Burmese was put down . She already knew the cat had cancer . As cat became weaker to the extent he would toile over trying to get out of his litter tray we took him to the vet for the deed . I’d explained the vet would give him an injection with a drug that would stop his heart so there would be no more suffering . I said it would be quick and the cat would just look as though he laid down asleep . And that was exactly how it was . DD just accepted it . Am not suggesting you take your 4 yr old but merely trying to suggest just describe it frankly how it is . Sorry for your pet x

If you're anything like my dad, he said 'Oh you know the cat?'
'Well, she's dead'

Apparently, I shrugged and carried on doing what I was doing!

Can you not just say that * became very ill and died peacefully. It wouldn't be lying, just not telling him everything while he is so young. I would think seven is young enough to know about euthanasing animals.

You have my sympathy, we had one put down not long ago and currently I have a cat who is very ill, albeit in remission, so will probably have to face the same fairly soon. Flowers

There's a bookmark called Goodbye Mog by Judith Kerr. It would help them understand.

My 4yo came to the vet when we had our cat put to sleep a few months ago. She knew the cat was very ill as she’d been to the vet lots of times with me and we’d explained it all to her and she was adamant she wanted to be there to say goodbye. She was brilliant and I’m really glad we let her come.

My child was 5 when we put our dog to sleep. She was poorly so I'd told her a couple of times she might not get better etc. And the day we were putting her down I told her that she was going to die today. I didn't go into the explanation about putting a dog down I didn't quite know how to explain that in the right way for her young mind. But they can always understand dying.

Thesearmsofmine · 04/08/2019 17:21

I would say that your cats body isn’t working properly any more
