I'm so gassy and do the smelliest farts ever

They are appalling and so smelly anyone else had this and found cutting out certain foods helps? I'm thinking meat, diary and onions need to go. Annoying because ee are about to go on hols to France but it has to stop.

Sounds like an allergy/intolerance?

The obvious ones are wheat, gluten, dairy. Try deleting those first - one by one - and see how you go.

DameCelia · 01/08/2019 23:18

Dairy tends to make the smelliest farts, it ferments inside you.
Cut that out first.

KnittingForMittens · 01/08/2019 23:22

Have you taken a massive shit? Sorry TMI but gas is usually very smelly if you need to go for a no2.

Chochito · 01/08/2019 23:34

Do you eat too fast or not chew enough? Chew gum or drink fizzy drinks? Those can all make you fart too.

As the previous poster said, stinky farts can be a sign of an intolerance.

Keep a diary of what you eat so you can trace back any periods of smelly farting to the foods eaten beforehand, then eliminate them and see whether that helps.

minipie · 01/08/2019 23:57

How often are you pooing? Is it every day? If not then that’s the first thing to address - more water veg and fruit (whole not smoothies/juice).

You could also have a bug - for example giardia which can be caught if you swim in a lake/river or drink the water in a developing country. If you see the GP they can do a stool test to check for this and other bugs.

I’d want to rule out these options before restricting diet.

omafiet · 01/08/2019 23:58

Are you taking magnesium supplements? That can get things moving and smelling...

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 02/08/2019 00:06

Systematic elimination diets are the way to test for intolerances. But you can't do that in time for your holiday. Probiotic tablets or yoghurt drinks and avoid the worst offenders is probably your best bet

MarieFromStTropez · 02/08/2019 00:09

Meat and dairy. They decay and fester inside you. I remember reading that the average American has 20 lb of decaying meat in their intestines.

TheWashingMachine · 02/08/2019 03:38

I do a poo every morning, sorry TMI. It has always been an issue for me but seems to have got worse. I love dairy, but eat loads of fruit and veg. Broccoli, legumes and leeks are also dreadful at exacerbating it. I don't drink fizzy drinks or chew gum. I take biokult probiotics every day. I think the dairy and meat need to go. I cook gluten free as my DH is coeliac so we don't have wheaty stuff around. No magnesium supplements. I'm embarrassed to say I once farted and my SIL threw up it was so bad. Blush Maybe, I'll just skulk off to my stinky corner now.

Leeks and legumes - I would say FODMAPs might be the issue. Worth a google. Low FODMAP diet can be quite restrictive, but you'll probably feel a lot better.

longwayoff · 02/08/2019 07:48

Start using mint, it's very helpful. You still need to check out intolerances etc. But drink mint tea after eating and have some extra strong mints to hand, calm your digestive tract.

tectonicplates · 02/08/2019 07:57

Have you ever had any blood come out in the loo?

DonJeer · 02/08/2019 08:20

Chocolate gives me quite awful wind.

actiongirl1978 · 02/08/2019 08:23

I've had to cut out onion and it's made a world of difference. I can't eat sprouts, cabbage either.

Meat or dairy hasnt made a difference to me.

SeaEagle21 · 02/08/2019 08:34

Get some peppermint tea and drink some every day - works wonders.

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 02/08/2019 11:28

I get really bad ones if I eat junk food or white bread

MargoLovebutter · 02/08/2019 11:36

Highly processed white bread does this to me the most - literally pure sulphur comes out of me. I'm also fairly bad with sprouts, cauliflower and baked beans.

I am not fit to be with if I indulge in a baguette. I even disgust myself and I find farts quite funny generally.

You have to work out what it is that you react to - there are usually common culprits, most of which have been listed above and then you can't eat them if you want to be in company!

Dowser · 02/08/2019 13:16

Strictly wheat gluten and dairy free for 5 weeks
Feeling much better and not bloated

SudowoodoVoodoo · 02/08/2019 14:33

If I wanted to gas a room out, my weapons of choice would be onion and sugar, especially chocolate or alcohol.

I realised many of my dietary triggers when weaning DS1 back onto his allergens after an exclusion diet, and after a happy phase, my system started deteriorating again. Dairy, soya flour and seafood will get me off to the toilet quite promptly.

It can be trial and error to work out your triggers.

lyralalala · 02/08/2019 14:39

Is it constant or just every now and again. For some reason 5, 6 and 9 days before my period I can empty buildings with farts.

It doesn’t seem to matter what I eat or what I do, it’s just horrid. Even in hospital on a drip after mouth surgery and not eating anything for 2 days and still it was grim!

MaitlandGirl · 02/08/2019 14:41

It’s caramelised onion for me :( it’s just awful.

VictorianWoman · 02/08/2019 14:44

Fabulous🙈🙊

Try the FODMAP diet - I did it for a few months and it seemed to reset my digestion somehow. Now I can have small amounts of high FODMAP foods and it’s usually ok (although I had a French onion soup last week and omg 😮 the stench!) .
